We're booked for Aug 2020 (Alaksa). We're waiting it out but also just booked Aug 2021 (Alaska) as a backup plan. If all goes as hoped and we sail this August, I would cancel the Aug 2021 cruise long before the PIF date. I always thought a cancelation before PIF would give you a full refund, but I'm reading Terms&Conditions and it sounds like I have to forfeit the deposit. Is that correct?

I believe if you officially cancel before your PIF date you get your deposit back. You can't just let it lapse and get your deposit back...meaning you need cancel it via your TA, phone or online. The reservation has to be cancelled. DCL will keep your deposit if you do not cancel and go past the PIF date. Don't just not pay the balance and expect to get your deposit back because you won't.

I have the Fall Panama Canal cruise booked this year but will be cancelling. I expect to cancel when the current turmoil dies down and I expect to get my deposit back.

Cancelling a cruise before your paid in full date will result in a refund of your deposit and any payments you have made. The only exceptions are concierge bookings and special booking that are declared as non-refundable at time of purchase (historically, some opening-day cruises; I’m not sure if any upcoming cruises fit this criterion).

Oh! What category?

I’m thinking of booking that when my April cruise gets canceled ;-)

We are booked on the Alaska cruise on Aug. 3 and our PIF is 4/6. Fully aware of ongoing discussions but I’m wondering if I should hold out for cancellation or if I should Pay and wait it out. I bought trip insurance with DCL and have bought trip insurance for our flights and hotel- through Expedia. I’m confused about cancelling before or wait till cruise gets cancelled as it looks like may well happen. I prefer to get my money back and not rebook for now. I saved for several years for this cruise and rather would spend the money at a later date- unless DCL can guarantee they will be sailing again in the next year or not. Don’t want to go through this stress again🤪

If you want to take the cruise, then make your payment. If Disney cancels the cruise, you will get at least a full refund, and possibly also an additional credit.

If you don’t want to spend several months waiting to see what happens, then you can cancel the cruise. However, you may not be able to get a refund for your flight if you choose to cancel unless you have “cancel for any reason” coverage. I’m not sure if your hotel is refundable or not.
