Keep them on until the Magic Bands ship. Then once you receive them go ahead and cancel the child. If that child will be doing a resort stay in a few months when they are able to go they will receive another Magic Band so they can pick a different color.
For those that are not aware, to use any fast passes associated with a guest, that guest has to have a valid park ticket and the band (worn by the guest) has to be scanned at the gate, thus using one day's ticket.
So...why wouldn’t you cancel the child? Why would you order the magicband?
If they are going in a few months (what I interpret “will make that up in a few months” to mean) won’t that resort reservation yield a magicband in the future?

The OP doesn’t say they’ll be offsite, and since this one is onsite I’ve started with the assumption that the next will be as well. (Nicer assumption than the one being made that the OP is doing it for Fp+ purposes)
If they answer that it’s offsite I suppose my next question would be WHY they want the MB for the offsite stay. I barely want them for onsite stays lol.
If it’s because the other kids from this trip will all have them, and the OP doesn’t want the child to feel left out, I would make sure the other kids will be bringing their old ones.
I likely have more questions based on the answer to my original.
You can see why I left my first response as basically “why would you want the band if the next trip’s resort reservation will yield a MB”...
