canadians ordering at vons

Thanks engo for your info, we are also with BMO MC, just called them and added a temp address. It worked perfectly. Thank goodness for these boards I have learned so much from all of you. We are from Calgary, visiting in Az this last month and driving to Annaheim the 17th of May. Our children and grandchildren ages 4 & 6 are flying in from Calgary on the 18th for a week of fun. Grandkids won't know til a couple of days before when we Skype to tell them. We haven't been to Disney since our children were 6&8, so can't wait to hear the squeals and see their faces light up. It's a very special trip for us. Thanks again to everyone for posting such helpful info.

Double checked with my client and they definitely used RBC Visa from Canada, but did it on the phone and the lady said there was a trick to get around it. She didn't remember, but it worked perfectly with no problems.

Squirrel, I have used a Cdn credit card at Amazon.com for a decade with no problems! Full Canadian address and everything. Amazon, Snapfish, Shutterfly, and Gymboree are notable/well-known sites that do allow this.
Have you tried recently?

Grandmah, I feel your frustration. Thanks again for letting us know what problems can pop up. You've helped my family prepare for our trip (which will include a physical trip to a grocery store).

Maybe it was just what I was ordering. I was trying to get free music downloads and it recognized me as Canadian and wouldn't let me. I had a code from the Budget Board for $2 of free music downloads. I also wanted to get some free Kindle books for my mom's new Nextbook, but figured it wouldn't work without a US address/CC.

Hi Sweethannah, we have rented a house so phoned MC and added that address and zip. I don't see why you couldn't do the same with a hotel address and zip. Call your credit card company and ask. My husband just mentioned it will probably help also for gas as we are driving and often it wants a zip code when we put in our credit card:)

Glad that it works for you too. Happy to help another Calgarian!

The trick with the zip code didn't work for me so thinking about setting up a secondary address that I have in the US. Leaving for airport in less than an hour so need to do this quick! LOL! Glad I found this site :)

I am 2 weeks away from trip and thought I would try putting through my Von's order and it worked!!!!:cool1:

When it asked me for my zipcode I put in 02000. My postal code is N0G2W0.
I have a CIBC VISA.

I am one happy camper as this grocery order saves us a lot of time!

Thanks for all the help on here and hope this works for someone.

Thank you for the tip!!! We tried and tried to do this on our trip a few months back and gave up since our visa wouldn't be accepted. We have an Amex Costco now so we'll def try that next time :)

Yes, please keep relating your experiences, good or not, with different ways of trying to place these grocery orders! It's very helpful.

This sounds like either some weird requirement in Von's system, or something to do with the financial institution that issued the credit card. I work for a Canadian company and myself plus my coworkers cross the borders all the time. We've never had problems with using credit cards "on the other side," in fact it generally seems to be easier for the Canadians.

When I go to Canada, I just need to call my Mastercard and Visa issuers ahead of time to let them know I'll be traveling abroad and supply some info related to my travel, otherwise my cards get declined due to fraud protection. AMEX has no such notification requirement so I can use it freely without notifying AMEX (maybe because AMEX is rarely accepted outside of North America and thus less prone to fraud but that's another story).

As for foreign transaction fees, my understanding is that those apply only to US cards. Canadian credit cards generally have annual fees but no foreign transaction fees, whereas US cards commonly carry no annual fees but almost always (with the exception of certain "high end" cards) have foreign transaction fees.
