OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian Member of Parliament Carolyn Parrish had said she hated "damned Americans" and called them *******s in the run-up to the Iraq war.

She found a new moniker, idiots, on Wednesday in discussing the planned U.S. missile defense system.

"We are not joining the coalition of the idiots. We are joining the coalition of the wise," the Liberal legislator told a small group of demonstrators.

Parrish, who had to apologize for her "*******s" remarks last year, at first denied using the word idiots, and when reporters pointed out they had her remarks on tape, she said: "I don't mean Americans are idiots."

Parrish then begged reporters not to use the remarks: "Please guys don't put that on tape," she said. "I already got into trouble once.... Really, please, I've had enough trouble."

Four hours later, however, she hardened her line.

"The last one was a really stupid thing to say," she told Reuters. "*******s is an inappropriate word. Idiots is a term people use in everyday conversation," she told Reuters.

"They tortured people in Iraq, they (the Iraqis) have no weapons of mass destruction. Could somebody explain to me whether you think they're idiots or geniuses?"

The top spokeswoman for former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Francoise Ducros, had to resign in 2002 for calling President George W. Bush a moron.

Chretien's successor, Prime Minister Paul Martin, has pledged to put relations with Canada's largest trading partner on a warmer footing.

Martin said after Parrish's latest remarks that the debate about missile defense, intended to guard against attacks from what the United States calls rogue states, was "very, very important."

"There is no room in this debate for that kind of language," he told reporters, waving his hand dismissively. "You're going to get very strongly held views but let me tell you those strongly held views have got to be expressed in language that is acceptable."

But Parrish refused to back down.

"That's Mr. Martin's opinion," she told Reuters. "No, I'm not going to apologize.

lets invade

Canada the 51st state

The company I work for has several plants in Canada that I have to deal with. One of our contacts there last week called us 'ignorant Americans'. I bit my tongue on that one but wish I hadn't.

It's so NICE being well respected around the world :teeth:

This person has been in trouble for calling American's names in the past. She's simply showing her prejudice. You'd think she'd have learned after the first time.

However, it does make one wonder where the term "idiot" should properly be applied.

Being respected by people like that is not something we should be striving for.

People who make blanket statements like this show their ignorance and people who are influenced by them show theirs also

Canada is just jealous because they are the Red haired stepchild of the continent. When they get atacked by terrorists I guess we can just step aside and not help them. I bet we would be their freakin hero if they need our help defending them!

And we should care because......I have nothing against Canada (hey....I love those Beaver Tails in Epcot). But, this really has no effect on us. We need to worry about the people trying to KILL us, not the people calling us names.

Frankly, I wish more people had her attitude. Maybe then we wouldn't so invaded with illegal aliens. Yep....we're so darn hated that people lock themselves in crates and risk death to get here.

Well as a Canadian I can say she doesn't speak for all Canadians and if you think she does you are sadly mistaken. Our Liberal government here is a waste of time and space as far as alot of us are concerned they just managed to fleece enough people to get a minority government here kinda like what Bush is trying to do in the US. This is just another example of how 1 person and what they say or do can have a negative impact on an entire country. Bush has brought the US some very unfavourable press and ill feelings towards Americans does this make all of the people of your country idiots or disliked no but as a person of authority speaking on behalf or your country it is taken as that. Just like this comment she doesn't s[peak for me when she speaks I didn't even vote for them so to make comments about our country because one of our idiots says something you do not like is just as bad. As for the redheaded stepchild comment that was pretty classless just another comment that adds to the animosity put towards the US remember it is the few that spoil it for the many.
A PROUD CANADIAN!!!!!
Also sorry if this is long and run on my pain meds are working over time after my knee surgury the other day.

Exactly. One stupid comment from a Canadian politician has a bunch of you wanting to punish the entire Canadian population.

Although 80% of the Canadian population does not support Bush, that does not mean that we have anything against the American people. Actually, we consider the American people to be no different than the people in our own towns, cities and provinces as most of us have family and friends throughout the continent.

At least 50% of your own population feels the same way. What are you going to do to punish them?

Re-elect him.

Be nice children. Just because one inconsiderate person made a nasty comment doesn't mean the rest of us are like that. I wish everyone would just get a long in this world, why is that so hard!

Some of the comments on this thread have really shocked me! IMHO, it's irrelevant whether or not you agree with this MP's comments. I believe it was out-of-line - sort of along the lines of, "if you can't say something nice......" I may or may not agree with George Bush on many of his beliefs, but I certainly wouldn't hold the whole country accountable for him!! Similarly, I would hope Americans wouldn't hold all Canadians accountable for an inappropriate comment by a politician. I guess I'm basically saying that it's fine to disagree with each other, but let's try to be nice about it!!

Unfortunately our Liberal politicians suffer from large foot in mouth disease. Hey she calls people who are not left wing liberals in Canada names. Ignorance is in all countries, try to ignore them. In my town most people work for an american based company, pretty hypocritical of them to call americans names. We also pay some ot the highest taxes in the world because of the liberals. So you should feel sorry for us.;)

<font color=navy>Also, keep in mind that there are a LOT more of us Americans who actually LIKE our neighbors to the north.

Not everyone jumps into the fray when it comes to denigrating a whole population for the words of a few.
