Canadian Dollar is going to cancel our trip.

Looks like we'll be canceling our trip this fall because of the exchange rate. We have a Free Dining bounce back for end of September early October at Caribbean Beach resort, but the falling dollar is making the price just not worth it. The trip was booked at $4400 US now will cost almost $6100 CDN plus flights for three of us. And by the time we go would likely be much higher. I like WDW but didn't have $6000 worth of fun last fall.

Totally hear ya on this! My dad recently passed and he didn't get the chance to go back to WDW with my kids so in the hospital he made mom promise she would take them. If she wasn't paying for this trip (except spending $) we wouldn't be going. We cruise every 2 years with Americans and that is being cancelled too hubby is from the UK and his family want us to come back for a visit but the pound sterling costs $2.20 to buy right now...not happening!

I feel your pain. We booked a VRBO house for an extended family vacay in Orlando. Let's not fly down the eastern seaboard in case we get a storm. We'll fly from Alberta to Disneyland first for a few days and then fly over to Orlando...... what fun. Non refundable deposit on the house.... non refundable flights. I am a little nauseous. 2 days at Disneyland and 2 days at Universal Orlando for 3 of us.......$1600Cad. Thank goodness my WDW were free with AM.

You chose to fly to Cali to avoid flying on the east coast?! I'm in AB too and typically we have layovers in Chicago or Houston. I try to avoid Toronto because I hate the airport.

i hear you! We have the same BB booked and I am just getting up the nerve to cancel it. We booked an Air Transat package to Universal.. $2500 CAD inc. air, hotel and car for a week for 5. We've decided to try a Universal Holiday this year.

Can you not look at other options? Staying in a Value instead of a moderate? Staying off site?

Flying on points with Aeroplan. Everything went through Toronto. At this point in time, I just stop looking at the dollar. I have to buy some US$ today. After that... everything we spend on food and other goes on the Amazon Visa. There will always be more money.... there may not always be more time. You can't put a price on that! 3 weeks from today....I will walk under that arch at Disneyland. Money really can buy happiness..... even at our crappy exchange lol

Same here. We were going to go for Christmas but the dollar isn't predicted to start going up until next year. So we will have to wait until next Christmas. We decided the best option is to take the $6000 and put it into another trip (wince we've done DW 5 times). So we are considering the UK as it's been on the back burner for some time. Hopefully we will get to Paris and do DisneyLand Paris for a day.

We also have a BB booked from last September that includes free dining. Haven't decided what we're doing yet but for the first time ever I'm considering cancelling a Disney trip we've booked. Going to see what I can do to save as much as possible to cover the exchange. Had also been saving our points with Southwest to fly to the west coast someday but may choose to use them if we go to avoid the exchange on at least the flights. Also, since won't be paying for flights can use that money against the nasty exchange. Not holding out hope things will get any better before our trip so just trying to spend wisely right now and tuck away as much as I can.

Yeah, I ended up the Universal route as well. Originally I was going to do an All-Star resort at WDW (accommodations and tickets would have been about $1800 USD so $2500 CAD) plus flight and food and I was getting kind of bummed out.

I decided instead to do Universal to save money (booked the tickets, flight, accommodations separate but it came to approx. $1950 CAD for 8 days)

Once you make peace with your decision then I guess the fun part is finding out where you are going to spend that $ elsewhere - planning a fun Canada trip somewhere perhaps.

Quantifying how much something is worth is very subjective - some people easily justify $10K on a vacation and some people do not want to spend more than a few thousand for vacations as there really is nothing tangible you take away from them. I think each person here has their tipping point - whether that has already happened at 75 cents or will take it going all the way down to 50 cents - we are all different.

It is disappointing and we are certainly not happy. We are looking at a trip costing $2200 more in CDN just because of the exchange - but even if the dollar went all the way up to 80 cents, it would still cost us about $1500 more. Those days of it being close to par sure were fun!!

I was planning to go down in Dec and stay at value, but decided to pass. Now, booked to go down at end of Feb when prices seem more reasonable.

Return flights were $300 cdn out of Detroit

Staying off site and splitting with sisters and bro in law

Condo has kitchen so lots of home meals

Sending non perishable food down with parents who will be down just before and meet all us

Doing things that aren't parks ie driving to coast for day, limited shopping, etc.

All in all, the prices to parks and at parks are going to hurt, but its not going to ruin our trip!

Dollar went up a cent today. I guess that is some good news. At this point I'd simply settle for the bleeding to stop!

The dollar is expected to drop to an all-time low of .59 cents by the end of 2016. This means it will actually cost Canadians more than double on the exchange.
We are bummed but for the first time in 4 years we will not be going to WDW or doing a Disney cruise. Even if we drive and stay at a value resort, it becomes a very expensive trip. It's not about being able to afford it, it's more about paying double for the same trip as in 2012. We thought WDW would become an annual thing, but nope. Only way we'll go is if there is at an par or at least something close to it.
Looking back on the last few years going to WDW and DCL, we will save a LOT of $ by not going there anymore. A lot. We plan to travel elsewhere and maybe that's a good thing.

Well yes and no. I haven't done the concrete dollar to pound back track, but even though it's shifted some, I think our dollar to the GBP has always been relatively around what it is now. I could be wrong but I've always estimated a little over .50 on our dollar to give me a rough idea. So yes, it's a lot for the exchange, but considering in 2 years we can get a lot more bang with our buck in the US, it almost makes sense to do the trip that will always cost us around $6000 - $7000 At any point vs the trip that generally costs us $5000 but this time will cost a little over $6000. That's my logic behind it, if that makes sense.

So it's not really about the dollar to GBP as much as it is what the chances of us applying the inflated amount to the same type of trip we normally have for less, or apply it to a trip we've been wanting to do for years but always go with Disney because it's cheaper.

$1950 CDN including tickets, flight, accomodations???! I'm assuming only 2 people? Even still, how did you swing this? Where are you staying, flying from etc? How many days at US?

I'm going in December. Since I have started travelling to Disneyland, Disneyworld since 1997 I have gone through lots of different exchange rates. I prefer to vacation in either Florida or California and that the way it is for me. I save a portion of my savings for travel and spend it on vacations as wisely as I can and try not to think about it too much. I usually pay as I go so when it comes to final payments it is less painful. Airfare I do on points and I book as soon as the window opens and hope that the flights that are usually not the best, change by the time I go (I have been quite successful in getting better flights). But, I realize that it's hard to see our dollar go down and figure out the US costs in Canadian.
