HI - I was wondering if anyone knew if a BMO Bank Card would work in the ATM Machines at Disney. And a subsequent question to that is...how much cash to take for one week, onsite stay. I am sure we will use mostly credit card and perhaps room key but always good to have some cash for tips, snacks etc.

Any advice appreciated
thanks::yes::

Hi Ariel85

We haven't had any problems withdrawing from our Royal Bank ATM card....anywhere in Orlando including WDW.

As for how much cash, DH and I are going in Feb for two weeks (9 nights/10 days at WDW) and are only taking minimal cash (~$100 US) as we will be able to charge to our room with our room card everywhere on Disney property pretty well, so that will go on our credit card anyhow.

Less cash is better, I think!

Hi, in the past we also have had no problem with our ATM cards in WDW or the Orlando area. The only thing we have had to watch for if whether our card was either the Plus, Cirrus, etc. and the machine had the corresponding system. Usually they paste them right on the front of the machine and the back of the card also shows what system will work. One other thing we learned was that even if an ATM machines shows that it will accept your card it may not:eek: We learned this our the hard way, called our bank and then realized we just had to go to another machine:p

As for cash... that is a good question...for one week a few years ago we took about $200 in US cash and other $300 in US Travellers checks... just in case....

Thank you for your replies. That is exactly what I was thinking. Well this makes it a lot easier.

By the way, I heard on the news that the CAN dollar could be up to 90 cents US by summer..... great news for summer trips.

thanks again:wave:

The only problem I've ever had with Canadian debit cards in when trying to make a store purchase (not in WDW, but in Orlando at Walmart). But at ATM's in Walmart they worked, so just stick to the bank machines and you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey All, It's not the actual bank/company that defines what card will work or not. It is the network that the card is linked too.......

i.e. I have a BMO bank card. It is linked to the Cirrus Network, hence all you have to do is find an ATM that has the Cirrus logo on it and your all set....

Hope this helps............ode

Regarding the debit card issue at Walmart - similar to the "Cirrus" symbol for ABMs, the "Maestro" symbol must be present for a POS (or debit card) purchase to work. You should be able to look on the back of your card and see the Cirrus and Maestro symbols. You may also want to touch base with your bank to see what your daily/weekly ABM/POS limits are to make sure they are sufficient for your needs (there are different limits that can be assigned to bank cards).

If you have trouble PM me - I work for BMO.

Further to this.....the problem with using your debit card in stores in the US is the fact that we don't have true debit cards per say, they are all checking cards. (or as they say here.....fake VISA or fake Mastercards!)

The difference is that a checking card works in principal like the debit (funds come right out of your account) but the transaction is processed like a credit card - you have to sign a piece of paper instead of punching in your PIN number.
Some of the stores here (Walmart) have the key pads like you do in Canada as they don't require you to sign anything, just put in your PIN number.

The problem friends from Canada encounter, however is the fact that even though you just punch in your PIN at Walmart, the machine will never give you the option of saying which account your funds are coming from (ie. Cheque or Savings) and therefore it won't process. DutchsMommy may have solved this with "Maestro" on the back. However, be prepared at stores in case you debit card doesn't work.

You shouldn't have any problems with cash machines, as most are linked to the appropriate networks. I have found that the machines at banks charge less service charge, and the independant ones like at Wilderness lodge and at Malls charge upwards of $3.50. Put it this way, they put these machines where you really need the cash, and service charge you accordingly.
Personally, I hate the checking cards and wish the US would go to the true debit cards.

My first experience with this was as the DS - I was waiting for the CM to hand me the key pad to punch in my PIN, and she was waiting for me to sign the slip.......I think she thought I just arrived FROM another planet.......hummm:scratchin......Ontario vs. Georgia.......I think I just arrived AT another planet..... ;) :teeth:
