Canada vs. America

THIS IS ALSO NOT A POLITICAL TOPIC....READ THROUGH AND YOU'LL REALIZE.


This was inspired by my trip to Western NY yesterday, and also talking with Kayla a bit on the SYF thread. Though Canada & America are REALLY similar, there are SO many small difference. I just made this thread so sort of point them out. Add to the list!

(sorry UK/others for leaving you out of the title...feel free to post though!)

Americans say Soda, Canadians say Pop (at least in my area.)
Americans say 'Restroom', Canadians say 'Washroom' or 'Bathroom'
My friends from NY came to visit and were STUNNED that we had bags of milk...so I assume you guys don't have those in America?
America has like a GAZILLION restaurants that we don't have here (like the Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, Bob Evans, Ponderosa, Sonic, Chick Fil A, Sbarro) just to name a VERY few.
You guys also have a ton of stores that we don't have.

Add to the list.
Also I thought we could use this thread to ask questions to like "Do you have..." or "Do you say..." etc.

My first question is do you guys have Cadbury chocolate? Cuz I didn't see ANY yesterday haha

And Canada has Tim Hortons.
Don't forget poutine either.

We have Dill Pickle chips, and Tim Hortons here.
I love Tim Hortons English Toffee Cappuccinos.
They're so yummy.

Hershey's makes Cadbury bars in the USA. I remember getting some. It was nothing like normal Cadburys chocolate.

In my area, i've never heard anyone call it soda or pop. It's normally just the name of the drink.

No restroom or bathroom. For us, being so informal, like to ask to use the toilets.

Loads of spelling differences.

My favourite difference is the word 'fanny'. For you guys, it's your bum. In the UK, it's in the same area, just at the front instead of the back on a woman...

We say pop where I live too. I think pop is used in the midwest, coke is used in some southern areas, and soda is used on the coasts maybe???

We have Cadbury chocolate eggs here.

We definitely have dill pickle chips. I love eating them as a snack... We also have ketchup...Heinz 57!

I remember when they were talking about bringing bags of milk to America but they never did (or I've never seen them). This was like 10 years ago.

Around my friends and family I'll say bathroom but if I asked a teacher in school I would say restroom, just because it seems more formal. Now that I think about it I think I use both "bathroom" and "restroom" around my friends and family....I definitely use restroom in formal situations though.

For chips we say chips, french fries for fries. I read that in England cotton candy is called "candy floss" and in Australia it's called "fairy floss"

They look like this and you usually buy three bags at a time and you need the plastic milk holder thing.

haha yep. that's what my friends from NY said too. they were baffled.

this is what it looks like.
you get three bags in a pack, and you have to have a jug or whatever to put the bag in, and cut a whole in the bag.

we also have cartons, but most people i know use bags.

yeah hershey's is NOTHING like Cadbury's.
my fave has to be pissed though.
here 'i'm pissed' means 'i'm drunk' not 'i'm angry'

i've never seen a bag of milk look like that before!!! haha



also, in the U.S when you ask for iced tea at a restaurant you get exactly that....brewed tea with ice in it! in canada we just have like...nestea type of stuff. i always get so frustrated when i ask for ice tea and forget to say with sugar in it because i'm not used to it.
