Can you're 6 y/o read? **Update**

DD#1 (6.5yrs) is now reading and sounding out unfamiliar words, she is in kindergarten but has a December birthday. DD#2 (3.5) shows no signs of wanting to learn anything, reading-shapes-numbers-letters she could careless. I also think it has to do with the first child wanting to be like Mom and Dad and the second child wanting to be more like the older sibling.

I will say that if you want to work with your son I have found the book, teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons an excellent resource. It helped DD#1 start to read by lesson 25. It only takes about 15 minutes of your time each night.

RELAX! I'd say read to them, surround them with age appropriate books, games, etc. and then leave it alone - let them set the pace. I would not do anything "formal" to work on reading skills unless they are clearly behind. (and just because some other children their age read doesn't make them behind!) I wouldn't worry about it unless they aren't in the beginning reading stages by the time they start losing teeth.

RELAX - I wouldn't compare your son's progress with that of your daughter's. I would talk with his teacher and see if he/she feels that your child is progressing/achieving the standard in Kindergarten. Also, I would encourage you to read with both of them over the summer since they will be out of school.

My son turned 6, near the end of Kindergarten. They were learning sight words at the end of the year, but he could not read a book. I remember him being terrified to start 1st grade, because he could not read well like the other kids (so he thought). By the end of September, he was in the top reading group. He is now in 4th grade, and reads at a 12th grade level. I would not worry about him at all, he'll be fine.

Yes--and they were GREAT!!!! They were perfect for beginning readers--in introducing phonics. The characters become familiar--and every word can be sounded out.

My DD was reading well in kindergarten. DS had all the letters and sounds down in kindergarten, but hadn't put it into reading. We did hooked on phonics the summer between K and 1st grade, and that got him over the hump. I'm very glad we did, because at the school they were at, in 1st grade, it was expected that they could read. Before I'd get too worried about it, I'd ask what the expectations are in your school's first grade. Ask for some sample work or maybe observe a class (then you can see if the teacher reads the instructions, or expects the kids to read and understand them independently).

I have always read to my kids, but never pushed *them* to read. When DS started kindergarten @ 5 y/o, he could write his first & last name - he learned that in pre-school. I helped him with recognizing letters, but have NO patience with the teaching part. Anyway, when starting kidergarten, he could not read anything - except his name. I continued to read to him & the school would send home short books - by the end of k'garten, he was reading @ a 4th grade level. He is now at the end of 1st grade & is reading @ late 5th grade level. i would not worry, I think he'll be fine.

DD turned 4 in Dec. and will be in 4 y/o preschool next year, she can write her 1st name, but not last and cannot read @ all. She will be one of the oldest due to when her b'day falls, so she might start to read before she enters "big school", but I'm not worried - even if she can't.

I think as some of the other posters it has a lot to do with the interest of the child.

My son came to me when he was 3.5 and asked me to teach him to read. I asked him why the sudden interest in reading he was like....." I'm tired of asking people what things say.' I felt that was a ligit desire so I bought him a leap frog and showed him how to use it and he was off and running. By the time he was 4 he was reading street signs as we drove down the street. By the end of his half day four year old program he was checking out library books with special permission from the librarian Now at the end of his half day kindergarten he pretty much has the run of the library. He is wanting to read the harry potter books and I'm trying to put it off until next year because he won't be 6 until June.

Ok sorry got side tracked my advise is a leap frog. dang I'm a rambler!!

That's great to hear! The vowel thing could trip up anyone but, this was his first attempt...that's just Great, imo!

Isn't it a wonderful thing to see our kids proud of themselves?! Sounds like he was ready, willing and ABLE!

Piece of advice: Don't buy too many sets of Bob...altho they're wonderful and, we used them, too.....DD was ready for 'real' books after set 2.

I hope your DS continues his success with reading (no reason why he shouldn't) and, becomes a lover of reading! Thanks for updating! It made me smile!

I'll take the advice you gave me, I was thinking the same thing about buying too many. I think after the next set (I snuck at peek at one), maybe we can move slowly to the beginner reading books of the same nature.
