DD#1 (6.5yrs) is now reading and sounding out unfamiliar words, she is in kindergarten but has a December birthday. DD#2 (3.5) shows no signs of wanting to learn anything, reading-shapes-numbers-letters she could careless. I also think it has to do with the first child wanting to be like Mom and Dad and the second child wanting to be more like the older sibling.
I will say that if you want to work with your son I have found the book, teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons an excellent resource. It helped DD#1 start to read by lesson 25. It only takes about 15 minutes of your time each night.
