Can you use Magical Express for luggage only?

Let's say you were staying at a Disney resort, but wanted to have a rental car anyway...could you use the Magical Express for your luggage only - having 2 kids it would be awesome to just not deal with luggage in a busy airport while corralling the heathens that I call my children

Going to Disney, it will actually work most of the time but do realize that if you are not a Magical Express guest (no one in your party on the bus) or did not follow the directions in the DME package, then the results can occasionally be unpredictable. Notably Disney might not take responsibility for luggage that never got into DME's hands, for example never arrived in Orlando.

Going home, the process of checking baggage at your resort is not part of DME and is available to all U.S. guests flying certain airlines at certain times.

Disney's 'official' word is that at least one guest must ride the DME bus in order to use the luggage delivery service. BUT....we have yet to hear of anyone having an issue with tagging the bags, allowing DME to grab the bags, while the entire group gets to their resort some other way. 'IF' something were to happen to a checked bag, at the airline level, you may not know of the missing bag until late on your arrival day simply because DME doesn't realize they are looking for any of your bags.
