I know this is probably a crazy question, but was just wondering since I was looking at budget ways to eat at disney where people bring in coffee makers, etc. I was wondering about crockpots? Since we will probably be driving I was thinking we could just go to the grocery store and possibly make crockpot meals?

I don't think you are allowed to use anything that "cooks" in your hotel room. Safety issues I think.

You'll get all kinds of answers on this question. Some will say "we did it, it was great and saved us some money!" Others will say, "It's a fire hazard and you can get kicked out of your room for it!" Still others will say, "you might could get away with it, but please don't because not everyone wants to smell your food cooking in their room next door."

For me, I say, "I can't be bothered to cook on vacation!" I probably would not do a crock-pot because washing it would be an issue - the bathroom sinks just are not very deep and washing out the residual food from the bottom might clog the drain. I just wouldn't.

Thanks! Never gave thought to the cleaning of it!! I knew there was something I was missing!!

:thumbsup2 I agree with this. I doubt a crockpot is allowed in the room. If you want to be SURE call the resort and ask. I can tell you that I use a crockpot at home and I know that it is perfectly safe, but I work at a group home, and we are not allowed to use a crockpot there because during the middle of the day no one is at the house while clients are at day programs, and we aren't allowed to 'leave appliances turned on' while not at home...something about insurance. The hotel probably will say the same thing.

Thanks everyone. My next question is probably another odd one, but has anyone taken their own refrigerator with them? I believe that the fridge they probably have at the resort is a 1.7 cu. And we just bought one for $55 at sears so it would be cheaper for us to take ours. Has anyone done this?

Yes, I think that's fine. There are some "fridge swaps" that go on here at the DIS where one DIS-er donates a fridge and it moves from family to family at the value resorts. If you have room for it, take it. :thumbsup2

There is a toaster and microwave that you can use in the food court. If you wanted to make some meals ahead of time and then keep them in your fridge, you could go to the food court and warm it up.

For example make some beef stew or chilli and keep it in tupperware in your fridge. That would be easy to warm up.

Maybe some kind of casserole that is easy to warm up? Then you can easily have some rolls or something with that. Maybe even one of those bags of salads that comes with a dressing pack and croutons, etc.

Very high probability that it would be unplugged by housekeeping. There are microwaves and toasters in the food courts. Try to plan your meals around using them or else book a resort room with a kitchen.

I understand that times are tough and that everyone is looking for ways to cut costs, but really folks……you’re on vacation. I have never been able to wrap my head around people staying in a regular hotel (not a condo or mini-suite with a small kitchen) and expect that they’re going to “cook” meals in their room.

Postpone the trip for a few months and save the extra $$$ for food. Enjoy your time with your family and splurge a little!

not advocating for cooking in your room as there are so many reasons it's a bad idea - but as an fyi - you can buy crockpot liners, I think Reynolds makes them. You cook with them in the crockpot and then throw them out - elimates the mess.

Why not just rent a timeshare. Lots cheaper than even a Disney value and complete kitchen facilities (well probably not a crockpot, but you could BYO).

We always stay in timeshares and do some meals there as well as plan to eat some special meals out.

I have recently become a big fan of off site condos with real kitchens and separate bedrooms for the kids. It worked so well for us this past spring, that I can't wait to do it again. On-site still works best if you do the parks commando, but a little relaxation in an off-site condo with a home-cooked meal (a crockpot is great for this too) is just amazingly wonderful.

If you want to stay in a value and have some easy meals here are a couple ideas for the microwave at the food court.
Easy Mac
Oatmeal
microwave soup
chicken wraps (use the pre cooked chicken in the refrigerator case)
tacos (use pre cooked meat)
Really anything that you can buy ahead that can be microwaved would work ok.

Here is what we have done that worked pretty well.
Breakfast in room (donuts/pop tarts/cereal bars)
11:30 early snack in the park - we all get a kids meal or snack (even the teens and adults)
2:00 ish leave park and have a sandwich/lunch out of our cooler by the pool.
6:00ish dinner at a counter service place.
On our way back to the room we fill our mugs and make microwave popcorn to snack on.
I take the packets to put in water so that we don't buy drinks.

We have gone in the summer the last few trips and find we do not want a large hot meal. Having several smaller meals works well. I plan about $25 per person per day for food. But that includes a sit down meal a couple times in the trip and that adds to my total amount. You could spend as little as $16 per person per day if you stick to one kids meal (snack) and one adult meal for each person per day.

Thanks!! These are some great ideas. My mom and I went to Disney in 2009 and we stayed for 11 nights. And it was costly. I am tossing around the idea of going back and taking my nephew, but I am trying to figure out the best budget way to do so. If I have to not splurge on meals then thats what I want to do. I will have to look at offsite again. When I was thinking of offsite I wasn't going to have a car, but now we would probably be driving. Thanks for all your ideas everyone!!

Glad to help!

If it is just you and a child I would stay on site so that you don't have to drive everyday. The 2 of you could use the bus. Also a child is less likely to want to eat at the sit down restaurants. Except maybe a special Character meal. I hope you get to go and if you have any other questions please ask!
