Can you tell me why? (transferred points issue)

What exactly is the reason behind being able to bank transferred points but not borrow them?

Doubt anyone here knows. I suspect it is either some type of system limitation or perhaps some type of accounting issue - banking and borrowing have to be somewhat in balnce for the system to work. Maybe it's just something DVC doesn't want to track.

I can't wrap my feeble mind around this... How could one need to borrow from transferred points? Are you meaning to ask... why can't you transfer borrowed points?

And now that Carol mentions balancing the two... I imagine that must be done or there could be chaos, but I don't know how.

This is too much thinking... Got any questions about VB?

:beach:

It's an arbitrary choice on DVC's side. Until a few years ago they could neither be banked or borrowed. I'm guessing it's in line with more options to use the points and less chance of losing points. Remember the banking deadlines don't apply to transferred points, at least not yet.

Even the fact that transferred points may be banked is a deviation from the original DVC rules but no explanation has ever been provided for the reasoning behind these policies or for any changes made to those policies.

In the original POS documents, "Banked, Borrowed, or Holding Account Vacation points may not be transferred" and "Transferred Vacation Points may not be Banked, Borrowed, Exchanged, or returned to the Transferring Club Member."

Being allowed to bank these transferred points is a more recent modification to the DVC policies - just as the original policy stated that "Only one (1) Transfer per Club Member, either as Transferree or Transferror, will be permitted during a given Use Year.", that policy was modified to allow multiple transfers (either in or out) for about 3 years and then was changed back to the original, current policy.

Also, in the original POS documents, members could only borrow up to 50% of their total points and coule not borrow those points except when making a reservation 10 months in advance at their Home Resort. That policy was modified a number of years ago to allow borrowing up to 100% of our points and using them 11 months in advance.

So, if I pay for room charges with a credit card and hand it to them with my left hand, I'll only be charged 90% for any pre-packaged snacks at counter-service locations, but if I use my right hand, I could (but not always) be charged 103% for any beverages that come in disposable cups WITH lids but not straws?

Much clearer now, thanks! ;)

Sometimes it's just better not to know why. You do it because it's the rule and because "Mom said so". Who knew Mom was just getting us ready for the World?

As I said, it's arbitrary. But any banking and/or borrowing has impacts on availability for other members and the ability to plan. Hopefully in a mature system with a lot of members it evens out with a roughly equal number of points banked to one year as borrowed from it. For OKW in 1999 & 2000 it didn't very will but that was understandable given the free passes and change in interpretation of the rules for those passes.

I wish I wrote down what the rep actualy said as the reason. It was along the lines of keeping the original use year and how I couldn't borrow into a future time window outside my own use year, which does in fact make sense in my case but not in every case. For instance, the borrowing window spanned my '07 and '08 use years so the points showed up under both '07 and '08 (at least thats what they said to me since I can't see those points online).

What the sales guides or MS staff say as a reason for policy decisions has little meaning. You can bet they weren't in on the decision making and likely have had NO input as to the reasoning behind this and similar decisions. You'll get much better info in those ares on DIS. Points systems have their good and bad side. One way a points system gives flexibility and recruits sales, is by allowing banking and/or borrowing. There is a cost both in terms of clerical but also in terms of system planning and room availability. As long as about the same number of points are borrowed as banked, the system works fine. Early in a resorts sales there's usually a surplus of units so it's not such an issue then. For DVC, the problem will be special events and the termination period. The turn of the century, combined with the last year to use points and get free tickets, was a strain but a manageable one. It's unlikely that there will be a large enough event to overwhelm the system if that didn't. The end of the contracts will be a different story. There are simply no where near enough units to accommodate all of the points eligible. DVC will have to have a way to ration the units, and hopefully the applicable dues at the end. I suspect a pro-ration plan is the most likely but lottery's and voluntary relinquishment of points in lieu of dues are also workable. While it's possible they could make it a free for all, use them or lose them, but I doubt they will.
