i voted YES! i grew up on the coast of North Carolina. swam in the ocean. i had no choice but to learn. my brother threw me in the pool and said sink or swim.
I also learned to swim at the hands of my older brother throwing me into the pool. Yes, It was learn to swim or sink to the bottom. I became such a good swimmer that I was able to out swim him and not be drowned any more.
The college that I attended required that all graduates be able to pass a 10 minute flotation test. Apparently a former student had drowned in Lake Erie and his parents donated a substantial sum of money to the college with the stipulation that all students pass a swimming test. Good think that I took a Red Cross swimming course when I was a kid. I am a horrible swimmer but a pretty good floater.
Growing up, a neighbor of mine taught me how to float on my back, so I'm most comfortable if I can just float around for awhile, but I love to swim too. I taught myself how to swim. My oldest brother told me if I'd jump in the deep end of a friend's pool, he'd fish me out if I started to drown. Stupid me did just that. As soon as I jumped in, he sprinted about 200 yards away. It was either swim or drown (I was the only 1 in the pool). Luckily, when I jumped, I jumped close to the side. I think I learned how to swim just to spite him.
I don't like to swim in mucky water though. I will, but I don't like it as much. Give me a pool any day.
Can't swim, would like to learn but I'm pretty much scared to death just thinking about it. If the water is over 4ft. deep I don't really want to be near it and the thought of putting my head under it just freaks me out to no end. I really don't do well with deep water.
I can't remember not being able to swim and I never had lessons. Either I was a natural or my mother taught me before I could remember. She claims that she didn't teach me.
Originally posted by Kermit I can swim very well, but water still freaks me out for some reason. I don't like the thought that if I mess up I could die.
Me too, Kermit!!! It doesn't STOP me from doing water-related activities, but it's like a little voice in the back of my mind that won't shut up. Even on a cruise....water so deep....so far from shore....
Can't watch movie scenes where people are drowning in some way.
I'm pretty embarassed to say I'm 23 and don't know how to swim.
I almost drowned to death when I was 5.... so that kind of haunts me.
Swim was required in high school, I got an 'A' for trying my best. By the end of 6 weeks of swim class I was able to float on my back
Obviously when I'm at Disney, I miss out on the water parks but that's ok. The 4 major parks keep me busy!
Yep. Swimming classes from about the age of 3 on. 12 years of swim team (through grade school, high school and a year of college). And I lifeguarded for 6 or 7 years. Our whole family are very good swimmers -- we spent most of our summers on our boat, so my parents wanted to make sure we could swim at a young age.
