Can you still get splashed by Shamu?

We have not been in about 8 years. One of the things we were looking forward to this May is getting splashed by the whales. But it doesn't look like they have that show anymore (I see that Shamu stadium is being refurbished and there are no shows until April anyway). I know there was a trainer death and they were going to change the show, but I never dreamed they would eliminate it....

Has anyone been lately and can fill me in on what the Shamu show involves now?

We've been since the show changed, and I can tell you we DID get splashed - repeatedly. Coldest water I've ever experienced.

Awesome!!!! I have told my DS11 all about it and he is quite excited! What is the name of the show? The only one I saw was Ocean One and it looked more conservation-based than...um....wet

It's actually quite the opposite. The name of the current Shamu show is One Ocean. One Ocean is probably the least conservation based show in Seaworld's history. There is a lot of splashing involved and not just from the whales, there are fountains too that will get you soaked if you sit down low in the front row.

We went in August and found that it was easy to find spots for the two of us in the Splash Zone 15 minutes before the show started. The areas just behind the splash zones filled up much more quickly. We sat maybe 12 rows from the front and got drenched three times. If you have a phone or camera with you, make sure it's protected!

The theme of the show involves the idea that all the oceans are connected and thus "one" ocean, and how we should protect the environment and its inhabitants - but the show itself was mostly just tricks and splashing. Lots of fun.

There was an egret who wandered onto the stage before the show and seemed to think he was the star, and I have to say, that made the whole show for us. He was too funny.

Oh no! We are going in March - I didn't realize the Shamu show was closed. The show is awesome and you can definitely get wet!

I've seen Tilly toss water 6 rows up in the "safe" seats, so it seems nowhere in the stadium is a guaranteed "dry zone".

If your son wants to get wet but you don't, he can go sit down in the splash zone and you just find a seat in the top section (there's a big sidewalk that separates the dry from wet zones, so it's easy to tell which is which). Lots of families do this, so he won't be the only parentless child down in the first few rows. Plus it makes for some great videos.

Actually right now-probably till April- you cannot get splashed by Shamu like you did at shows for the last 40 years. The One Ocean Show is closed while they renovate the stadium. They have opened up the area where you used to go Dine with Shamu, They call it Shamu up Close. You can watch the whales swim and once every hour the trainers work with the whales and tell you about them. The whales do splash, but the plastic keeps you pretty dry. Water only splashed us one time and then just our feet. I think if a whale jumped closer you could get wetter but if they ask the whale to do a move like that it is toward the middle. Of course they do jumps naturally in the wild so do them even on their own so there is always the possibility of getting wet.
We really enjoyed the up close time with the whales and planning on doing this every time we are there.

That was the one thing we were looking forward too. We wouldn't have went if we know the show was on break before we booked. Shamu up close was disappointing. They just swam around in the tank infront of us and came up and beached themselves once.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of renovations are going on? This is the first time I've ever known the show to completely shut down for months at a time (not saying it hasn't ever happened though) I mean we watched Believe many times over the progression of switching over to One Ocean and the whale tale in the background had construction going on all over the place but all shows were still running, trainers were wearing hard hats as they put the fish out in the containers.

I'm just glad I happened to go look at the pricing for Dine with Shamu in January because we were going to make a last minute trip and decided to hold out until it was back up and running...Sea World without a Shamu show just didn't seem right :lol

I think they are building the tank. You can do Shamu up close that allows you to see the trainers up close with 2 whales. If you sit on the benches you will still get wet.

They are resurfacing the bottom of the main pool as well as replacing the glass around it, from what I'm told.

Anyone have any inside info on when One Ocean will be back open? We will be there the 1st week of April. The website still says early April so I assume we are just missing it, but thought someone on here might be in the know!

The website shows Dine with Shamu accepting reservations for dates beginning April 14th:

so that would be my guess as to when One Ocean resumes .
