Thanks, this stuff must be really old too. We usually buy small bags and go through it in Oatmeal, bread baking, cookies and coffee. It was in a cannister he found in a cupboard instead of the counter top cannisters.
I use the slice of bread in sealed bag method, but it takes a day. Works like a charm, though!
Another good tip: after the cookies are made, put a slice of bread in whatever container you seal the cookies in. Keeps them soft......try this, its amazing.
I keep mine in Tupperware and it never gets hard. I try not to even leave it in the store bag at all cause it always seems to have a tiny leak and that stuff is sticky and messy.
If you have molasses and white sugar just make your own. I just put a bit of molasses in and blend until it looks like brown sugar. I'm sure there are actual proportions out there somewhere.

What is odd to me is that when I buy it in a bag, it really doesn't get hard, But buy it in a box and the stuff gets very hard. I wonder why? I guess maybe the bag holds in moisture, but it is in a bag when you get it in a box too. Maybe a different type of bag. These little things confuse me.
I have read that you can put a sliced apple in a container with it.
but they sell these pottery pieces you soak in water & then put in the bag of brown sugar to soften it. works really well. got mine at a kitchenware store.
