Was wondering if you have ever gone back to publix to return any food item? Not becuase it went bad but becuase you got home and you realized you dont want it or someone already bought it

We don't have a Publix here. I did have to return food once. I bought it for a party at a club we belonged to, well the club decided not to pay for it so I returned the majority of it. Kind of embarrassing, but I did get my money back. Other than that I have returned things when they've been damaged-- broken eggs, broken glass, etc...

I wouldn't. I'd just keep it or give it to a local food drive if it was non perishables.

I would REALLY hope that grocery stores would never be allowed to put returned merchandise back on the shelves. I'll not recheck this thread because if it does happen, I don't want to know about it.

I would hope it is not legal to accept returned food, for resale. I do not think anyone at any store I have been is certified to determine if something has been tampered with.

To answer your question, yes Publix will return it for you. If you have your receipt, you would get cash back and if no receipt then you would get a store credit back to use towards your next purchase.

I have return food before. But only if was bad. I return a watermelon at Aidi's because it was not ripe.

I've only ever returned bad food to Publix (box of oatmeal had bugs in it). However, it is Publix's policy to take back anything with a receipt, I don't know about other grocery stores. Personally, I wouldn't take back something that was perfectly good, I'd find someone else who wanted it.

Nope never ever!

But Funny you should mention this.....the other day someone was returning about 150.00 worth of food to a supermarket near me!
Eggs, bread, Milk.....I thought that was so flippen odd! :confused3

I just returned 3 boxes of cereal. They weren't bad or anything. They were from a discount store and the price was good. But then I went to the local grocery store and it was cheaper there! I didn't need 6 boxes of cereal so I returned them.

Publix is really good about taking back anything if you have a receipt. I've never taken back any type of fruit or meats. I have taken back things a couple of times when I have picked up the wrong canned item - like if I wanted no salt and picked up regular. Once I took back an angel food cake from the bakery because it tasted soapy to me. No problem taking it back.

Just last week I took back brownies (with recipt) to the Fresh Market because the nuts were bad. Again, no problem.

Yes, you can return food, but not all of it will go on the shelve back for resale. Canned goods, bottles with seals intact and boxes are ok. Anything perishable NO. If produce, dairy, frozen, meat, etc. leaves the store, even for 5 minutes it can not be put back on the shelf, it gets thrown out. Same thing happens to sliced cold cuts and buthcer shop meat, fresh seafood, etc...even if they don't leave the store. There is so much waste at store level and due to returns it's not even funny. We just had areas around here that were without power for days and days...people were trying to return the spoiled food from their fridges and were mad that we wouldn't take it back. During the Y2K scare, people were stocking up on stuff and then when nothing happened tried to return it all. We had to put limits on what we would take back at that time.

if it's still packaged and you have the recipt and it's only a day old i'm sure if you explained to the manager they would.

i work at a grocery store(Wegmans) and we take back almost anything except for alcohol produts.

They will take it back and resell it? Or just refund the money?

i know stores won't take back canned formula even if it's been unopened. dh accidently bought the wrong type once and when i tried to return it next day with a receipt the store said they were precluded by law from taking it back. just to see if that store was 'fibbing' i called a few of the other local branches of national chain stores and they all said the same.

Unless there is something wrong with the food, I would say once you bought it, it's yours. :thumbsup2

I don't know how to start a poll, or I would, because I'm really curious about this, having worked in retail, and seen it done. Do many people think it's really worth it in terms of gas, time and effort to return something that only cost a couple of bucks in the first place? I know I don't.

I've never returned any food item to a store that wasn't bad. Actually the only thing I can ever think of was a package of shrimp that was well within it's sell by date and went straight from the refridgeration at the store to the fridge at home. When we opened the package it was obviously spoiled so I took it back with the reciept and got the money back.
I think I would just freeze any other food and we'd eat it over time. There's been times when we've bought waaaaayyy too much for a party or something and then had tons of stuff left. We have either given it away or eaten it for the next month or two, lol.

A couple of years ago I was in (your Wegs actually) and asked for a pound of roast beef and a half pound of ham. She gave me a pound and a half of the ham. Because I had taken the ham from the counter and placed it in the cart before I realized it was too much, they would have had to throw it out! :confused3 So, I ended up buying a bunch of extra cold cuts so it wouldn't just get wasted.
I do love that chain and I wished Wegmans was in the south! :)
