For my book club this month, we are all reading a different biography/autobiography and reporting back. I am really excited about this idea - we've always read the same book in the past!

I have no idea which one to pick, I'm not too familiar with this genre. Has anyone read any good ones lately that they'd like to recommend? Thanks!!

Alice by Stacy Cordery

It's a biography about Alice Roosevelt, Theodore's oldest daughter. It's a bit long, but totally interesting and fun.

I might be a little biased though - Stacy was my FAVORITE college professor, and she started working on that book when I was in class with her. 10 years later it was published (last year) and did fairly well with the critics and stuff.

For a shorter biography....hmmm... I'll have to think about that one!

I don't know if it will count.. (forgot the name too) but I read the book written by Scott Petersons mistress and the emotional rollercoaster she went thru when she found out about Lacey... it was actually really good. I felt bad for her.

You may not like this.. but I just finished this book:

London's Burning: True Adventures on the Front Lines of Punk 1976-1977

by Dave Thompson. I'm a huge fan of early punk so this book was a treat. The book offers wonderful tidbits the really early scene and the political and economic landscape of the United Kingdom during this time.

I saw some fantastic pictures of Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten (some of my faves) Patty Smith and just some fantastic shots of fanzines, concert tickets and such.

There are some very interesting tidbits about Billy Idol as well.

I am almost finished "Audition" by Barbara Walters. It started a bit slow, with her childhood, but I found it a very good read. I had no idea how many glass ceiling she really broke.

"The Bielski Brothers" or "Defiance, the story of the Bielski Partisans"

The Bielski's saved over 1,000 thousand fellow Jews from the Nazis in Belarus/Belorusia during the 2nd world war. They even fought back against the Nazis and broke INTO death camps and stole Jews away. Pretty awesome story. And the movie with Daniel Craig wasn't half bad either ;)

Measure of a Man-Sidney Poiter
The Quiet Strength-Tony Dungy
Lucky Man:A Memoir-Michael J. Fox

Paul Newman: A Life, by Shawn Levy. Just came out in May and I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. I  Paul Newman, he lived an exceptional life.

"Life and Death in Shanghai" by Nien Cheng. Autobiography by a woman who survived the Cultural Revolution in China during which time she was imprisoned. Excellent heart-wrenching book.

if you've ever read "memoirs of a geisha" then i'de reccommend "geisha a life" by mineko iwaska. it's the book the title character from memoirs wrote because she was dissatisfied with the way her real life was portrayed by the previous writer.

"escape" by carolyn jessop is fasinating if you have any desire to learn about the flds.

i just finished "columbine" by dave cullen and it was very well written. it is a tremendous study of the lives and events surrounding the columbine shootings.

This is not a recent book by any strech--but I love My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. It is about when the author was about 10 and he moved to a small Greek Island with his family (Mom, teeanged brother and sister and twenty something brother--author Lawrence Durell). He is lighthearted and often hysterical and has lots of really engaging descriptions of the lanscpae and of small animals and bugs he "discovered" in his yard, etc. (he grew up to be an entimologist).

i liked "It's Good to be King", the story of Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, etc.)

Albert Schweitzer lead an exceptionally full, extraordinary, interesting life. I believe there are several biographies & an autobiography to choose from.

Have you read "A Child Called It"? It is an autobiography of a man who survived the most horrible child abuse. He has 3 books out about his life.

The next biography I plan on reading is Chronicals Vol I. It's the only one of three written so far by Bob Dylan about his life. It's supposed to be very interesting.

If you are into relatively modern history, then Katherine Graham's autobiography is great. She was the publisher of the Washington Post from the mid 60's (I think) until the late 80's, early 90's. The book is not new, but it is fascinating. My freshman year in college in Washington DC (1982), my political science professor called her the most influential woman in America.

I absolutely adore Edith Head's autobiography.

Everyone I've loaned it to loves it too. It is like sneaking into some of the costuming sessions of some of the most famous people.

They've also re-released it so you won't have to go find an old copy like mine:

The best part about this book, to me, is the styling tips at the end. Although they are quaint, you'd be surprised how well they stand up in today's times. She even suggests clothing attire for watching vs. playing tennis.

Dancing Naked in the Mind Field by Kary Mullis

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Kary Mullis won the Nobel Prize for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction, a chemical procedure that allows scientists to "see" the structures of the molecules of genes. Mullis is no shy, socially inept bench chemist, though; on the contrary, he has led as big and full a life as possible, opening himself to experiences like hallucinogenic drugs, surfing, casually handling dangerous chemicals, and taking shots at the sacred cows of science. Dancing Naked in the Mind Field is Mullis's own chronicle of his adventures, from wooing countless women to possibly being abducted by aliens, and it's a funny, shocking tale indeed. This man certainly doesn't suffer from lack of self-esteem, and yet you might want him along on a trip to the astral plane, say, or a tour of the human genome. Mullis is a fascinating character and his autobiography will put to rest forever the stereotype of scientist as skeptical nerd. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
When biochemist Mullis won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1993, the press played up his being the first surfer laureate, as well as the first to admit having used LSD. In this collection of essays, Mullis reveals that he also encountered a woman who saved his life while cruising over him on the astral plane, as well as an extraterrestrial who seems to have been a cross between a raccoon and E.T. Mullis argues passionately against the commercialization of science, by which unorthodox but promising ideas fall victim to grantsmanship and marketing; against the assertion that the HIV virus is the cause of AIDS (Mullis insists this theory is still not backed by sufficient evidence); and against the outlawing of psychoactive substances without giving scientists time to study their effects on the nervous system. Mullis was an expert witness on the DNA evidence at the O.J. Simpson trial, although he wasn't called upon to testify. Here, he gives his take on personalities in the trial and explains why he thinks the LAPD's handling of the blood samples was like running a "one-man line-up." Some of Mullis's opinions, like his slightly muddled critique of global warming and his defense of astrology (he didn't receive the Nobel for his work in astrophysics), come across as just plain cranky, in various senses of the word. But whether or not readers agree with Mullis or believe all the details in his accounts of some of his experiences, his eccentric and often insightful opinions about science and life in general will challenge them to reexamine their own beliefs.
