can you recommend a good gps?

i am in vancouver bc and was thinking about buying the dh a gps for christmas. he gets lost in his own neighbourhood so i thought it was brilliant ....anyways, i digress. looking on ebay, there are some great deals but are the compatible in canada?

do you have 1?
would you recommend 1?

and heres the biggie...how much did you pay? i was thinking about $100 for a unit. is that even possible or am i being el-cheapo??

I have a full service turn by turn with voice GPS in my cell phone... it works great.. but ..

Basically, you want one with NAVTEQ maps for north america.

A good price is about $200-$250. Watch out for European models that do NOT have North American maps..

Garmin and/or Magellin are both great buys (with map updates available).

Don't be swayed with "features" such as MP3 playback.. it's an expensive option.

We have a Magellan that we bought at Costco for $159...it is a basic GPS (we didn't need all the extra features like Mp3 etc) but it is very user friendly. We took it on our trip to California, our road trip to NYC, actually we take it everywhere...it is invaluable! One thing I would suggest is not to get one too big if you do plan on taking it with you out of your car.

I bought my husband a Garmin 650 for his b-day. We took it to Florida last spring and to New England last week, it is great, has features we wouldn't use, MP3 and photos. I paid 350., but you can get one for less without these extra features. Ours is a widescreen and this I would buy again.

i got the Garmin oneXL it is a great gps unit and you can download from garmin free updates

I've got a Tomtom GO720 and love it. It is has been great for all the travelling we did over the summer and I'm looking forward to seeing how it works around WDW. It does have MP3 playback capability but I got a great deal on it in the spring for $299 at Visions Electronics. I've also been able to install a free video player on it. I've got a 8GB SDHC card in it for video, mp3, and picture files.

do you think the prices will go down before christmas? i was watching the wii prices fall nicely and was hoping the same would happen for the gps.

what about advice on buying on ebay? i guess if the sellers return policy is good, i should have no problem. i like buying from the store though. have to admit, in the hands kind of shopping, i likey!

I never buy anything electronic off ebay...too many risks. I am buying dh a garmin handheld for Christmas for geocaching. Usually stuff goes up as Christmas is closer but with the economy in the crapper it may be a slow year and you might find some deals. Keep checking that website their is lots of cheaper ones on there.

Garmin Nuvi. Luv it! luv it! and of course you can download Disney waypoints, Tim Horton's alerts and Star Trek vehicles to replace the little red car. Ok, so you can change the little red car to a bunch of different ones!

Cant go wrong with a Garmin Nuvi. In Ontario, Canadian Tire has one on sale in this weeks flyer for $219. I paid $249 for it like 6 months ago......

Don't go with cheap..you won;t be happy..we got ours at Canadian Tire when it was on sale...love it !Paid 199. AND I find the talking street names VERY important make sure you get that...in other words instead of it saying turn right in 50 metres it will say turn right at MAIN ST in 50 metres....big help for me....they will say provides street names but make sure it says "speaks" street names.....

COMPLETELY agree on the talking st. names...Our is an older model that does not but we are looking at giving it to my brother and getting the talking st, names for our trip to France. We have found some Nuvi's with Europe maps as well... Garmin all the way.
