Can you pay the difference in cash?

If I buy points, either through Disney or resale, can I pay the difference for the room in cash?

So let's say I need 80 points for my stay and I only have 71 left. Do I have to borrow points from the next year or is there a way just to pay cash for the 9 remaining points? Thanks :)

As I understand it, DVC reservations come from a completely different inventory than cash reservations, so while you could surely make two reservations at the same resort, back-to-back, subject to availability, there's no way they'd be linked in any way.

As it is, you probably would be better off borrowing points, but also keep in mind that you can rent some extra points from another member, when necessary.

As asked, the answer is no. However, there are many ways to stretch points if you need more at times. In your stated example, options might include:

  • One night with cash rented through DVC
  • renting one time points from DVC if you only need a few
  • Getting another member to transfer points to you.
  • Cash through CRO
  • renting a reservation from another member.
  • Skipping a trip on points and either going somewhere other than Disney or trying a resort simply on cash, hopefully with good incentives.
All present risks and/or have limitations but all are viable for the right situation. They do mostly preclude difficult unit types and some can only be done at 7 months out. All are subject to availability of course.

Disney will allow you to add up to 24 extra points (for $15/point)--once per use year per membership--at the 7-month mark (not during the 11-7 month home resort priority period). So, under your example, I do believe you could make up your 9-point shortfall by paying Disney $15/point for those needed 9 points. You have to be short on current year points; but you need not borrow the next year's points in order to qualify for this.

Disney calls these "one-time use vacation points"--

Note: there is a bullet point in the member website explanation that states that one-time use points are available "when you purchase directly from Disney"--I don't know if this means they're not available if you're making a reservation with points from a contract purchased by resale. Maybe someone else can chime in to answer that question?

Details are on the dvcmember.com site. Here's what's printed on that site:

"One-Time-Use Vacation Points

See the details on how you can obtain a minimal number of additional vacation points to use towards your stay of choice.

As a Disney Vacation Club Member, occasionally you may find yourself in need of just few extra vacation points in order to book that perfect dream vacation. Previously, this required borrowing vacation points from a future use year, but very recently a new alternative was introduced. They're called "one-time-use" vacation points and are available for a fee of $15 ($13.33 plus $1.67 tax) per vacation point. Availability of one-time-use vacation points may be limited or suspended from time to time, and the fee is subject to change.

Details:

One-time-use vacation points are vacation points available for Disney Vacation Club Members to use as an alternative to borrowing vacation points from the following use year's allotment.

You can obtain a maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year per membership.

A maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points are processed in a single transaction, not multiple transactions.

The fee for one-time-use vacation points is $15 (including tax) per vacation point, and is subject to change.

One-time-use vacation points expire according to the use year of the reservation booked and are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be banked or borrowed.

One-time-use vacation points are not available for waitlist reservations.

One-time-use vacation points cannot be applied retroactively to existing reservations.

One-time-use vacation points are only available for Members whose contract is closed and in good standing.

One-time-use vacation points are available only for Disney Vacation Club Resorts, Disney Collection*, Adventurer Collection* and World Passport Collection reservations.

* Available when you purchase directly from Disney.

One-time-use vacation points used for Disney Vacation Club resort reservations can only be used up to 7 months prior to arrival.

One-time-use vacation points for Disney Collection, Adventurer Collection and World Passport reservations can be used according to the booking guidelines for each individual collection."

We did this for our October trip we needed just 5 more points and paid $75 per point.

$75 per point???????????????????

Hope that was a typo!

The dvcmember.com site says the cost per point is subject to change...but $15 to $75 per point would be huge!

With regards to where you say "only availlable when you purchase direct through Disney"... I see where you can think that. However, the asterisks are on the parts of DVC that is not availlable on DVC resale. That is what they are referring too. Resale contracts can rent points from Disney, for use only in DVC resorts.

If you find you are constantly short of just a few points you can also add-on through Disney with as few as 25 points, 50 if financing.

if you do decide to use cash to book the last night of your reservation, just be aware that a very few room categories (i know for sure BW view, but am unsure which others) are only able to be booked using DVC points, not cash in any manner.
so, one would need to change rooms if beginning a stay in a "point only room", and wanting to pay cash for that last night (and, yes, that is exactly what happened to us once).

No but as others have said Disney allows you to by up to 24 pts per use year to take care of little shortfalls in points without borrowing from the next use year

I am laughing, because I posted almost the identical question at about the same time:rotfl: I am gald that I am not the only one who could find an answer to this question.

Does this purchase program only work for people that purchased their property throught disney?

I am closing on a property in December, and may be short.

As soon as I get the property, I'd like to book for the first week in June, and the Sunday following Thanksgiving.

I believe I could be a few points short, so should I book my home resort first (at the 11 month mark) then book for the (earlier stay) in June that will be within the 7 month process?

Sorry, but I'm new to all of this.

Thanks for any help!

There is no current restriction about the purchase of one time points and I wouldn't expect there would be in the future.

What is the scenario if you have borrowed your next year's points and still fall a couple short? Can you still purchse up to 24 points to complete the ressie?

As long as your within 7 months of the day your using points for, there should be no other restrictions.
