Can You Opt Out of an Activity?

DH and I are considering our first ABD trip in 2011. There are quite a few trips that have peeked our interest, but they all seem to have one or two aspects that would not really be enjoyable to us.

The Alaska Trip and the Rocky Trails and Mountie Tails are the front runners. DH is not a fan of water, but will go on a boat, but "raging" rapids on a raft and sitting in a kayak would probably throw him over the edge. For me, it's horseback riding. I don't mind being near a horse, I just don't want to be on top of one.

When these adventures are happening, do you start and end at the same place? After any of these adventures, did you travel directly to the next leg of the trip? If that's the case, I could see that would cause an issue.

Thank You!

Most of the activities originate and end at your hotel, so you can easily opt out of any of those. If the tour is remaining in the same general area and you want to provide your own transportation (taxi, shuttle, etc.), you can separate from the group. There is also free time when you have to arrange your own transporation if you want to schedule any activities away from the hotel. As long as you are at the bus (or other transportation) when it's time to move on to the next location you can do whatever you want.

The only rafting trip on the Alaska ABD is a leisurely float down a river, there aren't really any rapids. I haven't been on the Rocky Trails trip, but on the Alaska and Costa Rica trips the rafting is very mild and I suspect that all of the ABD rafting trips are similar, since they are meant for beginners and children. To the best of my recollection, on the Alaksa trip, the Alaska Pipeline, Trailbreaker Kennels, and Alaska Wildberry Products, were the only times we stopped in transit between hotels for activities.

Thanks! That gives me some piece of mind. Now, we just have to wait until later this year to see what's going to be offered in 2011.

I've been on four AbD trips and I'll admit right away that I'm adventurous in my travels (been to the Middle East more than a few times) but not in anything that's remotely physical. Okay... I did hike an underground lava cave in Iceland in February, but in the light of recent events, it was really a moment of madness. ;)

When AbD had the Flavors of France trip, I opted out of the kayaking. On Bella Italia, I didn't ride a bike, nor did I in the south of France -- but that was mostly to stay with some folks who were traveling with me. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it...) The guides always had something else for us to do. In France, it was an easy hike to meet up with the group at the end of the bike ride. In Italy, it was a short tour with the local guide. For the kayaking, we walked or rode (can't remember!) to where those kayaking would end up, and took some great photos of everyone coming in.

I've booked over 120 people on AbD trips and that's a common concern, especially with multi-generational families. I always get the same response -- AbD will accommodate anyone who wishes to opt out of part of the tour. Also, you're well aware a day ahead of what's coming up, so there are no surprises.

Trip five is coming up in June, and I doubt I'll bike around Versailles, but you never know. Heck, I did hike an underground lava cave... :)

One of the guides accompanied that person on a slightly different adventure hiking down instead of ziplining down.

Best vacation we ever had - last year's Rocky Trails and Mountie Tails Adventure by Disney Tour. The Tour Guides were awesome and every activity had an opt out option. My husband wasn't sure he was up for all of the physical activity, but he was able to do everything. Our group ranged from 8 to 80! and the Tour Guides took great care to make sure everyone was accommodated at every skill level.

I, too, was very worried about the rapids, but found that it was not 'raging' at the scary level and was very glad I did it in the end.

I cannot say enough good things about this once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

Welcome! You are our very first poster who has taken this trip! If you're inclined to tell us about your experience, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would be very happy to read about it, me included.

I agree with Bobo912! I was supposed to take this trip last September, and it got cancelled. I'd really *love* to hear more about how the trip turned out, if you'd care to post more!

Sayhello

Just wanted to say thank you again. You have definitely calmed my concerns. I see an ABD trip in our future. Now, the hard part, decisions, decisions.

We're thinking about the Knights & Lights tour, and had a question about opting out of the Lion King. Would it be possible for us to opt out and see something else on the West End? Obviously, we'd pay for the tickets by ourselves, but if it had a similar run time to Lion King, we could probably use the same transportation, right?
