Can you only swap SSR for 30 plus years?

The bait and switch thread got me thinking. What does Disney tell potential SSR buyers about their ability to swap in the last 12 years of their contract, after the other resort contracts expire?

Doubt it ever comes up.

Best wishes -

Well, it didn't come up other than in a roundabout way when I asked about future DVC plans during our recent SSR tour. Our guide simply alluded to the probability, not certainty, that DVC would continue to build new properties and couldn't or wouldn't elaborate any further.

As I said in a different thread, I found this surprising and a little shocking. Expecially since one of the major selling points used during our tour was the ability to use your SSR points at any resort. This definitely played a role in where we chose to buy. Part of the reason DVC appeals to us is the fun and ability to experience ALL of the unique resorts based on our needs and travel dates.

Not that I think it highly likely, but lacking any concrete information from Disney to suggest otherwise, IF there is only one DVC property available until 2054, I'd rather purchase now and experience everything DVC has to offer until 2042 and then say our goodbyes. Having only one confirmed (and SSR has nothing to do with this, we thought it was a nice resort) DVC resort for the final 12 years bothered us enough to purchase at BWV.

I think it's like this. SSR is part of the DVC II series of resorts. All the others are part of the DVC I series. The next few that are to be built will also be part of DVC II, all with the same ending date. The same as all the DVC I resorts have the same ending date. Does this make sense??

It certainly has real logic to it. There are lots of possiblities as to what you do with the "DVC I" resorts in 2042. Sell extensions to 2054 or start all-over with longer periods to off-set the "DVC II" resorts expiring in 2054. That way you are leap-frogging expiration dates of the two programs.

We asked the question to our guide. Obviously the first resorts we will not be able to book after their expiration date. We will, however, be able to use the ones built from now until ours expires. "If" more are built;) !!!

We own at BWV and have watched all of the talk about that final 12 years...our plan is to keep our 200 at BWV and the add-ons that you know we will do, would be to the current DVC project that is underway. SSR just doesn't appeal to us right now, so we'll wait to see what they do next. I am thinking the same as Sean noted that the new resorts will have the same 2054 end date. So when my BWV points expire in 2042, I will still be able to use my add on until 2054 when I am 83! I think that covers me!

The contract I just signed for BWV states that my points are set to " CURRENTLY " expire Jan 31 ,2042 currently to me means right now but may change . Like " HEY , You wanna spend big money to buy an add-on this time its not another resort its a chunk of time , like 12 more years ?"

There is someone up there in the pantheon of Disney Suits that has a pretty good idea of what's probably gonna happen come 2042 to the non-SSR properties. We're just not privvy to it.

Part of me says, "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." I'm wondering, too, if my heirs will have the opportunity to "re-contract" our BWV come that time (even though I'm counting on still being around.). "Currently set to expire" might end up being a key phrase.

I just plan on enjoying what I can for as long as I can. Sort of like eating dessert first.

I would guess that by there will be more DVC II properties built. They may also give the DVC I owners the ability to add on 12 more years to their contracts. Or maybe they just begin to sell all the expired DVC I contracts again to a new group of people, giving the DVC II folks first dibs.I'll be 80 & DH will be 84 in 2042. We'll worry about that when the time comes.

When we asked our guide about what would happen at our expiration date, her repsonce was," Who knows what Disney will do in 50 years!?" and laughed. Now based on 20 years ago I would have had no idea where I'd be today, on a personal level I laughed at her humor, but was serious about the question since you can will your deed to your heirs.

We've always felt this is a serious quesiton, but as some of you previously stated, do the suits at Disney really know what path they are leading us all down in the future?

Great Topic, thanks to OP!

Someone here (can't remember who, sorry!) said that the person who will make that decision is probably only in grade school now. Really, 38 years ago they hadn't even dreamed of DVC, WDW wasn't even built yet, imagine what they could come up with in another 38. Who knows. I love SSR so if I only ever stay there from ages 70 through 82 that's fine by me. :thumbsup2

This is just MHO but I imagine that by the time points expire the resorts will either be replaced or need major renovations. Renovations can be paid for by selling new contracts, replacing them would simply mean a whole new phase of DVC. Guess thats for you younger folks to worry about, I'm over 50 and own at SSR I really would like to still be going to Disney but doubt if thats very likely.

with the dues we all pay they better keep the resorts in NEAR pristine condition with renovations along the way to the end!!! ;)

If there is only SSR after 2042, how bad will that be? Just think, a room at Pop Century then will probably be $500...

for the first 4 years - there was only OKW - called then DVC....
no complaints - I loved OKW. If it was the only DVC still - I would still love it...

I know some of you feel that way about SSR.

the other resorts are okay to visit for a night or two. but for long time stays more DVC prefer their home resorts...

I was looking for the /sarcasm tag but didn't see it. IMH - and slightly cynical - O, the Disney Suits are focusing on the next quarter, and it is the rare visionary who is thinking about the next few years. To expect that one of them even cares about what's going to happen in 38 years is, well, a little pixie-dusty. ;)

Seriously, I don't think I'd trust - or respect - the opinion of anyone who said that they knew what would happen then. I'd rather that the "Suits" in power at the time gauge the market and determine if offering extensions, blowing-up-and-rebuilding (a la Las Vegas) or simply shutting down the DVC I resorts was the best option at the time.

Thankfully, I'll be dead by then and won't have to worry about it.

Hmmm. That didn't come out right. I'll try again.

I'll be dead by then and, thankfully won't have to worry about it.

That's better....

Thankfully or otherwise.

While I'm content with the current condition of BWVs for the dues I spend, it isn't in pristine condition now, and I don't expect it to be in 2042, or whatever.

One of my SLIGHT disappointments in DVC is that they really aren't kept up to the same level as the Deluxe resorts. ('tho the Poly and CR got pretty ratty pre renovation).

It's interesting you brought this up. Our last trip to WDW a few weeks ago, was for the sole purpose of trying DVC for ourselves for the first time, to assist our potential purchase decision.

The first two nights before we checked into DVC were spent at AKL. We had never stayed at this resort, and splurged on a Savannah View room. While it was an incredible resort and a memorable stay, the room had an overpowering dank, musty smell.

We didn't complain about it as we were only there for two nights and we were in the parks most of the day, but we had never experienced anyhing like that at a Disney resort before. We also didn't experience it at all in any of the 3 DVC resorts we stayed during this trip.

In fact, while we were at Vero, we noticed a de-humidifier in our Inn room. It was explained to us that these were new, since the hurricanes last year allowed enough water into the rooms under the balcony doors that many of the rooms had to be completely gutted and refurbished. Even there we never noticed any offensive odors.
