I know it's a dumb question but can you use luggage locks on your checked luggage (at the port)?

We are sailing on the 8/1 Dream. This is my parent's first cruise and I am trying to help them with getting the necessary "supplies". They only travel by car so they aren't used to their luggage being out of their sight so they don't have locks. When my mom asked me I realized I had no idea.

Thank you!!

We usually do (if we remember). Never had an issue.

We always lock our bags when they are going to be out of our control. There are some who feel it's a wasted exercise, but I think any deterrent (small though it may be) that slows down someone trying to get in my bag is better than none.

Disney X-ray's all bags And if there are "supplies" in your bags that shouldn't be there they will open the bags and remove the supplies. You will be able to pick up anything removed after the cruise.

The only thing we ever lock bags with (for cruises or flights) is zip ties. And we put a pair of nail clippers in an OUTSIDE pocket of a bag (or carry them on).

But usually I personally don't even do that, if DH isn't traveling with us. If someone wants to get in sneakily they'll get in. And there are youtube videos out there showing how to get into the zipper without bothering the lock at all.

We always lock ours because it does provide some small measure of deterrence for the casual bypasser who sees it as an opportunity. But also because I don't trust the zippers to not come loose and open up with the way that baggage is handled.

I hav nevr locked a bag anywhere. All the stuff that I can't replace is with me. I've been traveling for 40 plus years, on flights, cruises, etc. and never had a problem. Not that I can't happen I'm sure. It just never has.

I always lock mine with tsa approved locks.

I have seen the plans needed to make your own copy of the TSA master keys. The funny thing is that it was the TSA that provided the opportunity for this to happen.......... They are widely available online.

Regular geniuses that TSA gang, not thinking about 3D Printers. I still use the locks, because at least they won't get cut off, and as other's have said, it'll deter the casual passer by.

Once surprised a couple of kids trying to put an ice cream cone into someone's unlocked luggage outside a cabin the night before disembarkation. When they saw me they took off, but not before shoving the cone onto the bag though they missed the unzipped opening. I found a steward to remove the bag (and hopefully tell the owners what happened).

I don't lock my suitcases on embarkation day, but I do lock them if setting out in the corridor the night before debarkation for this very reason.
