Think of someone you know who has a MySpace/Facebook page, is it indicitive of their demeanor/character/personality? Now think of someone you don't know who has a MySpace page....can you tell anything about them from it?

Is it unfair to judge someone on their pages (if you do not know them)?

ETA: This question came up when I was thinking of the "Other Woman"/Mistress who helped break up my marriage. Her MySpace page portrays her a loving, family oriented, friendly person. Her daughter's MySpace page (her daughter is 15) is portrayed as ultra-narcissistic, conceited, & inappropriate. I thought the contrast was interesting. So my answer is...I don't think you can tell a person from their pages.

I think you can get a sense of a person's beliefs and their sense of humor or lack thereof....but I don't know about completely judging their character. My SIL thinks I am depressed and bi-polar based simply on my FB page but the problem is we have only been around each other in person like 3 times, so she doesn't really know me. Thankfully everyone who does know me, knows she is wrong! LOL! I am just kind of the female Jerry Seinfeld. I can't help it if I have a thousand pet peeves! Hahahaha!

No I don't think it's unfair to judge someone based on their profile. That is what THEY are putting out there for the world (or their friends) to see. THEY created the page...why wouldn't I judge them based on that? I mean if someones profile comes off as rude, arrogant, and generally mean spirited...I highly doubt they a friendly, lovely person to be around in real life.

Of course someone may be trying to come off as someone they aren't, but I imagine it's a LOT of work to create an online "personality" that is your polar opposite. I think most people are too lazy to go to the trouble.

Agreed. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

I'm not sure, but I'm beginning to worry about some of my acquaintances. They are always talking about drinking (getting drunk.) I've never seen them drunk, but, from their posts, you begin to wonder.
Personally, I attempt to keep my posts on Facebook reflective of my true personality.

People who crave attention the most usually give themselves away on Facebook/Myspace.

The more frequently they update or post a new status = stay away! You're dealing with a narcissist (spelling?)

I don't think that is even remotely close to a fair assessment. Some people change their status often becaus ethey're bored, or it's the quickest way to alert a group of people to a time change of an event, etc etc. LOTS of reasons a person could update their status frequently.

But the subconscious motive...whether or not the person is fully aware of it...is saying "hey, look at me". It is a very self-centered trait to habitually post status updates.

you can definitely judge someone's character via myspace/facebook!

what is put on myspace/facebook is all of our "front stage" behavior. its what we do when we know people are watching, and its what we want them to see. yes, that is definitely a judge of their character.
