Can you help me with this points spending question?

We would like to try and stay a few extra days than the usual 7 and stay at BCV in a 2 bedroom for maybe 6 nights and then to avoid the heavy points on Saturday, switch to AKL in a one bedroom since it holds 5 for 2 or 3 nights (there are five of us) We have 286 points and I either need to rent or borrow points. Has anyone else done this and what is the best way to save points? Thanks!!

I think you have a good idea. Why don't you borrow the points for the first time, and then if you like doing it, buy more points!

I agree. Borrow the points from your next use year. If you find you always need more each trip, then start an add-on for the number of points that makes sense for you.

That is what we did about a year after our first contract. We purchased 230 points initially thinking it was plenty, but after planning just one year's worth of trips, we discovered we needed more. We added on another 150 at the same resort (to have 11 month booking with all points) and that has served us well over the last 10 years. We just added on again at AKV to give us an every third year 11 month booking window there.

I may be wrong, but I think the 1 bedroom with sleeping areas for 5 won't be available until the Kidani building opens in 2009. Check with Member services.

Although you will have to split people up you can get 2 studios if I remember my schemes that I never followed through with it is the same amount of points as a 1 BR.

Good idea, especially at OKW...since all studios have 2 queen beds.

Another option if your going switch resorts anyway - think about paying cash at AllStar for the Fri/Sat high point nights

Does Allstar Fit 5 people? That usually ends up being our problem with that 3rd child is that we loose a lot of options with hotel. That is a good suggestion....all of them are good suggestions. Do we get any kind of a discount at the non DVC resorts since we are DVC members?

We stayed in a 1BR at AKV (Jambo House) in late August & it slept 5. The living room has the pull out sofa and sleeper chair. The 1BR unit is smaller in Jambo than it will be in Kidani though. We have 3 younger children and it was OK....if you have 3 older kids/teenagers, it might be a tight fit.

Your plan sounds fine. I'd borrow points rather than renting unless you get a sweetheart deal. You may also want to consider further for cash for the weekend as that may indeed be your best value. It sounds like you'll have 3 weekend nights, another way to stretch your points would be to arrive on Sunday and move on Friday (5 nights in a 2 BR at BCV). You could also consider a SV unit at BWV if available or a 2 BR at OKW. I guess the question is the makeup of the group. Will a two pull outs and one regular bed be enough, if so and one is not crib age, the AKV option is a really good one.

Dean,
Thanks for the input...to answer your question, the two pull outs and a regular bed would be good for us, we have a 6, 8 and 10 year old so they are young enough that it would work. I like your Sund-Friday idea at BCV, then AK for 3 nights. So, if I am figuring this right, for October 2008, it would be 32 points X 5=160 points at BCV, and then savannah view at AKL at 2 nights (Fri-Satu X 48=96 +1 night at 24 points for a total of 280 points . (I have 286 available). Did I figure that right? I also figure that I could go down to Standard view at AKL and I could stay a 4th night for 280 points. This is all of course, if it all works out even getting these 2 resort to begin with, but that is a different story altogether. Thanks!!

I didn't check the math and cross reference the charts but it sounds right. I hope it works out, have a great trip.

Thanks Dean, (I didn't want you to think that I wanted you to check the math or the charts, just that I was on the right track with the idea):) It will be a miracle if the availability will work out anyway but I will give it a try. Thanks again!

I do hope it works as timeshare are so much more fun when things do work out.
