Can you help me pick out a sling?

We had a Bjorn with my son and I wore it twice. I hated it. I have a large chest so adding even more weight to my front just killed my back. We will be bringing our 4/5 month old to WDW next year and so I am looking for a hip type sling that might work better for me. We will of course have a stroller but a sling would be nice to. Any advice on something that is not going to kill my back?

I used a Hotsling in Disney when my dd was a year old. It is lightweight, easy to fold, you can throw it right on and the baby sits on your hip. I am plus size with a large chest, and it is perfect for waiting in line, as you can see . She had just turned 1 and was 19lbs.

I had a hip hammock that I absolutely loved when our kids were little. I got mine when it was still a mom-run business, but I think the Playtex Hip Hammock is pretty true to her original design. I loved it b/c it wasn't really a sling - it had a belt for my waist and another that ran over one shoulder. Baby sat in the circle of my arm, just as if I was holding him on my hip with no help, but my shoulder and waist took the weight.

For a sling, I found that the cheap old NoJo worked very well for us. I had one in the car and one at home, and I loved it.

We love Hotslings, (have tons of patterns, and the swim/sun ones are great), some people like the Kangaroo, (it is adjustable), and I'd recc a good soft carrier like a Beco or Ergo. They will not give you back problems, and they hold the baby/child correctly, (not putting undue stress on their hips and other areas from hanging that happens in a Bjorn or other similiar carriers).

I am a 30H, and I nurse in all the above mentioned carriers, and carry a baby/child 10 hours a day or so... with four active children we are always moving. (I am a size 2, and LOVE that Hotsling has LOTS of sizes, and that our Beco and Ergo can fit me and DH).

I loved my Babyhawk, although I never used it on my hip. I'd definitely recommend it though!

Hotsling...hands down.

We didn't use it for our son past about 9 months though as he preferred his stroller.

But, they work great and can be used in several ways.

I second the beco or ergo. The good thing about those is that when LO is big enough, they can sit on your back, which makes doing things so much easier. I would also suggest a ring sling. My oldest hated sleeping in it when he was little, but it was great to carry him on my hip as he old heavier!!

If you want a pouch sling i loved my peanut shells..
Babyhawks are great for piggyback rides and being totally handsfree..and i LOVED my Kanga X for when the baby got bigger. The Kanga X (she also makes a J and XT now) was similar to a beco, but MUCH more comfortable.
I think checking out thebabywearer.com is your best bet..there you can even go to the FSOT forum and possibly get a few different (gently used carriers) to try and see which yo like the best..then sell off what you dont like. Good luck!!!!

i recommend getting something with Solarveil depending on the time of year you are going, it keeps the baby cooler. Solareveil is discontinued so you would need to buy used on thebabywearer FSOT section...we went in march and used a solarveil bamberoo...my DS 2as 18months and around 28lbs then.
he even slept the entire time during illuminations and the bus ride back to the resort and thru the night lol dont mind my brother it was colder then we thought it would be

I had a hotsling first (back before they were sold in stores!) and it was OK. I measured wrong or lost weight before I got it, b/c it was never really comfortable.

A bit too late I got a mammasmilk sling and it was *wonderful*. A problem I had with the hotsling was that it just seemed to deep. DS would get "lost" in there. But the mammasmilk sling wasn't that deep and it was great for the hip carries in the brief amount of time I had the sling (actually slingS 'cuz I got in on a co-op).

Definitely wish I had gotten a plus mei tai (I had a mesh-bodied one), and the Ergo would have been terrific to get earlier as well.

thebabywearer dot com has great recommendations based upon what you're looking for. I had a Peanut Shell, KKAFP, and Hotsling. My fav has been a SSC (soft-structured carrier) from Action Baby.

I tried hotslings, and I think it just was a poor fit for me- One size was too big, one was too small. I LOVED my zolowear ring though.

Mom of 6 - I alternate between a sling (heart2heart) and a fabric backpack (Snugli from Evenflo). I appreciate being able to 'fling' baby in and out of the sling easily, picking him up and putting him down with little effort (rides on the hip nicely). For our Disney trip with a one year old, I wore him in the backpack all week. It is all fabric, no metal frame, so he is snuggled up to my back. I never had to take him off to get into shows or rides. I wore a knit shawl that is very lightweight to keep out the sun, but let in the breeze. I wore him all day everyday except when we were eating/changing, etc. He was very content there, and it was not a problem for my back.

I suggest a ring sling (like a Maya ring sling) for hip carries. If you think you'd like to do a bunch of different carries (front, back, side) you could go with a Moby Wrap. Those do kind of have a learning curve though.

I'm also large chested and can use a Babyhawk or Moby Wrap on the front, too, which I think is easier on my back.

I wore my ring sling from Jan all over Disney a couple of weeks ago with dd who is 5 months old. I love it, but I used my Connecta Solarweave 80% of the time because it is much more comfortable for longer walking and has a hood to cover baby's head when they're sleeping. The two shouldered carry puts less strain on your shoulder, and is leaves you completely hands free.

Sleeping baby has wonderful slings and are less expensive than some of the "name" brands such as Zolo, although I like those too.

The problem I find with the hip ones are that my hip goes out from the extra weight. Have you tried a Beco or Ergo? They are similar to Bjorn, but MUCH better for your back and distribute the weight more efficiently. Just a thought, gl!!

I second comfy joey!! IMO they are way more comfortable than hotslings.
