Can you get on waitlist with online booking?

With my 7 month window coming up, I can't access my non-home-resorts to see how this works just yet. Was wondering if anyone had this experience yet:

If I use online booking on the morning of my 7 month window, and my first resort choice is not available, will it give me the option to get on the waitlist? And then can I immediately check my 2nd resort choice? Or will it reroute me through the depths of Disney technology?

Yes. Wait list and other resort options are available online.

Yes, you can waitlist. My first request was not available and the system offered an alternative, but also asked if I wanted a waitlist for my first choice.

Correct, assuming you don't already have 2 wait lists going for other reservations. The site will even tell you if you already have 2 wait lists (the limit at any one time).
I recently did just what you want to do. We are going in March and decided to invite some friends. We wanted a 2 bedroom dedicated near Hospitality House at OKW for them. We could not get all nights for that so we booked a 2 bedroom dedicated (which could be anywhere at OKW) and wait listed the 2 bedroom Hospitality House room. I was even asked if I wanted to cancel a current reservation if the wait list came through (which I did). I did all of this online. Yesterday I got an email that the wait list had already come through. I checked the DVC Member website and, sure enough, the original reservation had been canceled and the points used for the wait listed room. Sweet.
