I woke to a swollen PAINFUL thumb knuckle. :guilty: IT HURTS!!!

Being the hypochondriac I am, Im looking up stuff online - could it be gout?

Man -why does it have to be labor day weekend -no docs are open, and the thought of the ER for my thumb seems silly.

Its hard swollen, feels like I broke it. I cant use it and it's radiating all from a bumpie area on the kunckle....right thumb too.

Help!! Anyone have exerience with this?

Please? :sad1:

It hurts so bad I want to chop my thumb off. :sad2: :guilty:

I suppose you could but it's very unlikely that the first point that Gout would show up would be your thumb. It primarily hits the toes and foot first. My father has had it for over 20 years and it's ONLY in his foot. We thought my DH had it but it was in his foot and ankel.

It was later determined that DH has some version of Tendonitis in his foot.

I wish I had some ideas for you but I don't. Can you remember any time in the last week or even two that you caught your hand funny or your thumb funny? Sometimes even sleeping on it wrong could do that. My wrist does that now with DS because I lean on the floor playing with him and then the next day it kills ...

Good Luck. Try some pain killers and a cold compress.

I also suggest taking some Advil and soaking the hand in some Epsom salt water.

herc.

Does it hurt to move it? Does it hurt when it's stable? Is it any achy hurt or a sharp hurt?

Have you take Advil or any type of pain reliever? DH now swears by Aleve, which I have never taken before I am an Advil girl.

Have you tried to wrap it up? Immobilize it? (I think I spelled that wrong!)

Honestly if you have done all those things and you are still sitting in tears, I would consider going to the ER. It's not silly if you are in that much pain.

It feels 'funny' when not moving, hurts a whole lot when I move it and havent attempted immobilizing it.

About a half hour ago, I popped 4 Advil....and it feels much better, BUT still hurts. Really sucky. :guilty:

Ill see how the day goes - if the pain pills dont keep it at bay, I wont have much of a choice then the ER. Or the chopping off of my thumb as I previously mentioned....

Its one of those.... you dont realize how much you use it and take it for granted until you CANT use it....things, too. You move it often, which it turn hurts often.

Thanks again.

it sure sounds like gout, nothing compares to that pain. the first time i had an attack, i swore my foot was broken. i've mostly had it in the lower extremities, like foot, toe, ankle and knee, but last year i got an attack in my elbow. all are extremely painful.

My husband has gout only in his hands. It way more common to be in your feet but you can have it in your hands.

For those of you who have gout experience -

What do I need to do? Ibuprofen until it goes away? Do I NEED a DR visit?

This freaking sucks -it HURTS!

TY soooo much!

Do you have an urgent care nearby. Might be better than the ER, on a holiday weekend.

Are you running a fever at all? Could be celluitis?

could you've possibly dislocated it? I did that once in my sleep ( I have no idea how!) I went to the ER because I was in so much pain, the doctor grabbed it, relocated it ( :scared: ) within 5 minutes the pain was gone, I was just sore!

Really?!?!?! Geez... I dunno! :confused3

I dont understand WTH I could have done in my sleep to have done that?! UGH!

Its at the knuckle... not down low.

Good lord!! I cant believe you did that in your sleep!!!
