Can you freeze bread?

For some reason, we always buy two loaves, but the second loaf always seems to get wasted!

My sil says the bread is fine if you freeze it...I'm just worried about it being stale!

I usually freeze left over bread and use it later to make French toast, grilled/toasted cheese sandwiches, and toast. I've never tried using it to make sandwiches, though.

If you freeze it fresh, it's fine when you thaw it out but doesn't seem to last as many days as a fresh loaf. But if you realize late in the week you aren't going to use it up and toss it in the freezer sometimes it can be a bit stale when it comes out.

I always frreeze bread. I would do it more often but dh hates it for some reason. Until he knew I was freezing it, he was eating it.

I freeze bread all the time, and unless it spends a LONG time in the freezer, its always fine.

Absolutely - been freezing bread for years with no problems!

I freeze bread all the time. When it's on sale i stock up and buy 2-3 extra loaves. If i know it's not going to get used within the first 4-5 days i freeze it right away. when it defrosts it's the same as it was the day we bought it.

I buy 2 loaves each week and always freeze one of them. Always comes out just fine. Very soft.

Thanks for your replys!

another question: How long do you defrost it for, and is there any special wrapping that you do to conserve it? Or do you just put the bread in as is?

I always freeze bread, it goes in fresh, comes out fresh.

No special wrapping required, just toss it in the freezer. It takes a couple of hours to thaw, so plan ahead.

I just put the loaf (in the original plastic bag) into another plastic bag, secured with a twist tie. Or if it is a loaf from the bakery, I double bag it.

I always freeze bread. I also usually only thaw out what I'm using. I put it in the microwave for 15 seconds or just put it in a baggie and let it thaw overnight. If it's been in the freezer for too long I use it for toast or grilled cheese.

Not only can you freeze bread, but if you need to cut bread into cubes, freezing it first makes it MUCH easier to cut!

1) Do it all the time.
2) The wife and I don't finish a loaf before it goes bad.
3) We freeze our bread, then take 1-2 slices as wee need/want them.
4) Once toasted or thawed, you can't tell it was frozen.

I always freeze bread because if the Oroweat outlet has the kind of bread I like in stock (only about a third of the time), I buy 10 loaves or so. It's about $4.50 at the grocery store :scared1: and only $1.59 at the outlet. It's hearty bread, not white/soft anyway, so day old is fine.

I only buy bread once every 4-6 weeks at the Wonder Outlet. I put it all in the freezer. It is cheaper there, and they have our favorite kind, Home Pride Potato bread. I find that it freezes better than some others. Now when we run out and I have to use white or wheat, nobody's happy. Potato bread is so smooth and yummy!

Good excuse to go to the town with the bread outlet, that's also where my favorite thrift is!

I buy whenever they're on sale and freeze. It may just be me, but if I want to thaw a whole loaf rather than individual slices, I find it seems to taste fresher if I first thaw it in the refrigerator, then put it out on the counter to come to room temp. It seems more fresh in texture. You can simply thaw in the fridge without the counter step, however -- I only bring it to room temp b/c I don't like the texture or taste of cold, refrigerated bread.

It also seems to me that wheat breads take freezing better than white. Again, no real evidence, just personal observation ;).

I buy our whole wheat bread at the local Pepperidge Farms outlet, 6-12 loaves at a time (dd is allergic to soy and the outlet carries two varieties w/o soy, so when I see it, I buy a LOT). I throw all but one loaf into the freezer as is, no extra wrapping needed as Pepperidge Farms already double-wraps the bread. When we need more, I take the loaf out of the freezer and let it thaw on the countertop. I don't store bread in the fridge.
