Can you explain Vudu to me?

Their website doesn't do such a good job at it. We just got my dd a TV with this app on it and I understand you can "rent" movies but what does the "buy" cost get you? Do you build up a library?
We have Netflix so I am trying to figure out if we need Vudu as well.

Subbing...we have Vudu on our Blu-Ray player and have a "free rental" but I've never even heard of Vudu so I'd love to learn more about it...
