Can you explain the nighttime safari?

I think I'm missing something basic about the nighttime safari. How do you actually see anything? I doubt they give everyone night vision goggles (or do they?!?!). If they have lights out there, how is it "nighttime", and why would it matter that it was nighttime? If they shine spotlights or something, that seems rather difficult to do consistently. How exactly does this work?

I'm debating moving my daytime safari FP+ to a nighttime safari FP+, but I am trying to figure out what the point really would be.

On the other hand, I can imagine Kali River Rapids, with the fire effects, being pretty cool to see at night...

It is still dimly lit. Google it and I think there are some test shots showing what it looks like.

There are lights, but nothing so mundane as spotlights. The lighting system is supposed to mimic sunset on the savannah. Plus, they have introduced some animals that are primarily nocturnal.

But since it hasn't opened to the public yet, no one here can say how successful this will be. If it works as anticipated, it should be a great way to experience KS in a whole new way.

Do the daytime safari and the nighttime safari count as the same ride, for FP purposes? Or can you reserve a FP for each?

Same ride. You could hope for a 4th FP for the night or just book the late time and go on the safari first thing in the morning.
