Can you drive a stickshift?

My DH (boyfriend at the time) taught me how to drive one. It was a nightmare. But I have not droven one in a long time.

yes, and I could also eat a burger while driving the stick

Hahaha! Nope. I prefer cars that ares automatic, systematic, and hydromatic Wait...thats from Grease...but still no stick for me.

Yep, I learned when I was in high school and even though the cars I drove at the time were automatic, the first car that I bought (instead of borrowing from my dad) right out of college was a Civic 5 spd. I traded that one in a little under a year ago and now drive a sweet little Civic Si (5 spd as well). I doubt I would ever go back!

I just learned how also. My boyfriend gave me his old car (also a civic) and my car was pretty much ruined, so i had to learn how. I don't like it though.

tricia.

Yes! I have a Ford Escort, 5 speed. Love it! My brother and I both prefer manual. My only problem is when DH drives my car and thinks he's back in his Mustang GT. Ummm... my Escort can't do what your Mustang could!

LOL this post brought back memories!

When I was 16, my BF at the time had a 76 Chevy pickup- with 8" total lift, and 38" tires...and- of course, the 4spd manual...

One afternoon we were just our riding around, and he went to our highschool. His cousin was there in the parkinglot. BF got out of the truck said "we're going to my house, when you can drive this come get us"....he said- this is the clutch, let it out slowly, heres the gear sequence...blah blah"...

I bout died, but after about 45 minutes, I got it, well, not smooth, but there was nothing smooth about driving that truck with the gears it had, so I went and got him...LOL

My K5 Blazer is that SAME 4spd his was! DH's 'vette was a 6speed, that was a BLAST to drive, but now our daily drivers are automatics. DH decided after 15 years of driving a truck with 15 or 18 speeds he prefers an auto now! and my grand am with the V6 can't have a manual, so I had no choice, though I would have preferred a 5spd...just not the 4cyl that would have come with it!

I currently drive a Honda Accord stick shift, and the only cars I ever owned were sticks. I love them, and I think they are fun to drive, and more "cool" than automatics too! The other great thing about stick shifts is that no one can borrow your car, which was really great in college when carless "friends" kept begging to borrow mine! :) :)

My dad also only had stick shifts, and he just bought a Subaru Forrester stick shift. Nice to see that car companies still make manual transmissions. :)

I was in the Army when they still used Jeeps (this was in 1982). One day I was assisting our company mechanic in the motor pool and he asked me to move a Jeep from one side of the parking area to the other for him. I had never driven a stick and didn't really want to admit I had never driven one. I knew how to drive one "in theory" so I hopped in and gave it a shot. To make a long story short, I moved the Jeep with no problem, and have never had a problem driving sticks.

Yes, I actually enjoy driving a stick shift on occasion. I don't like it in stop and go traffic, so I currently own an automatic. I used to have a RX7 (the first one) and it was a lot of fun!

Yep I can but I like automatics much much better.

DH taught me to drive a stick in one nights time, after that I didn't have a choice if I wanted to get to work I had to drive the stick!!

Our daughter wanted to drive to school in her senior year of highschool, so I taught her how to drive a 3 speed on the column(3 on the tree) in my 1955 Ford Customline. She took to it like a fish to water and had a great time using that car. Wound up putting more miles on the car than I ever did.

yep! i have a 5 speed. i love stick shift!!! refused to learn how until i wanted to buy a car that was manual transmission. got in to test drive, stalled once and that's it.

My Mom would not let us get our licence intill we 1st knew how to drive a manual.

Glad now she did.

I miss my 1st gen rx. Manual trans is a blast to drive with the right car in the right situation. Learned to drive one in college with a Merc Lynx station wagon alone with a dead battery. If you stalled, you push-started it by yourself. Learned real quick.

When I first learned to drive (Dad taught me - didnt go to driving school) my Dad made me learn on a stickshift.
He told me if I didnt learn then I most likely wouldnt.

A blast from the past. Growing up my Dad always owned a standard shift. They were called standard then because cars had the shift on the wheel, instead of the floor.

I even remember the old Buick had a choke too. Nasty trying to get those cars started on a cold winters morning.

If you didn't take a standard driving test you were not allowed to drive a standard vehicle. What good was a license if you couldn't drive your Dad's car.
