All my cars have been manual ones, in fact most cars in the UK are. I actually really dislike hiring cars abroad as they are usually automatics and I just don't feel as in control when driving them.
Yep- Dh and I can both drive one- I taught him to drive a car and a stick shift. We both used to have them- I loved driving one!! But alas now we have a stinkin' minivan.
I taught DH how to drive a stick when we got married and bought a little MG. It was a cute little car with a stick shift. We have had several over the years, but we also use to buy cars without air conditioning. Once you reach AARP age, you appreciate things like automatic and air!
I can, but I didn't learn how until I was around 19. I learned how to drive 3-on-the-tree when I was around 30. My DH prefers stick, I prefer automatic.
Yes, my parents required us to learn to drive a manual transmission car. My instructor raced cars on the weekends and taught me a few manuevers I've used over the years.
In college, I got to drive lots of sports cars, since I'd be the designated driver if I got to drive the sports car! It was worth it! So many of the other gals were green with envy that I got the keys to the fast cars.
My first 3 cars were sticks - actually 2 cars and a truck. Before I got my driver's license I was driving a tractor on my paren't farm (by the time I was about 10, I believe).
Until I had kids, I prefered to drive a stick. My DH has driven one before for a day or 2, but isn't comfortable at all with it.
My dad made me practice the "hold on a hill using only the clutch" maneuver over and over when I was a teen!! I hated it and kept asking him why did I need to learn something so stupid? It definitely came in handy later in life- thanks, Dad! You were right!!
I had to learn when I was 19!! my ex left me and the only car that I had access to was a little Toyota 5 speed...I had a bf (now dh) at the time that took me around our small town and made me learn how to drive it b/c I had 2 kids and he didn't want me alone and have no car!!
My first car was an automatic, and then I bought my second car before I even knew how to drive it. It was a Triumph Spitfire, and my husband jokingly asked me to marry him the day after we'd first met, when he saw my new car!
I can drive one. I think everybody should be able to. I have owned standards before and expect to in the future. They get better gas mileage. My dad made us learn to drive a standard when we got our permit.
I much prefer it to driving automatic. I don't feel the temptation to multi-task (talk on the phone without a headset, eat while driving, or anything) because it's really not possible with having to shift constantly. It's made me a much more attentive driver, and I feel like I have more control over the car.

Same. I feel i have more control over the the car plus they are just more fun to drive. Last time I drove an automatic was 7 years ago. I don't plan on going back.
I greatly prefer driving a stick, for the same reasons as everyone else. I learned from a friend while in college and the first car I bought after college was also a stick. I drive a stick, PT Cruiser, now ... love it!
I don't think I saw anyone mention it, yet, but another benefit to a stick is that you don't have to worry about all this "unintended acceleration" that seems to be going around ... if your gas pedal ever gets stuck, just step on the clutch pedal and you're safe!
