This might be a strange question, but I haven't flown since before 9/11 and with all of the security now, I was wondering if I could bring my toiletry bag as my carry-on. With my shampoo, make-up, suntan lotion, contact stuff, etc.... I don't think I want to check-it because of the spill factor, but maybe they don't allow that stuff on the plane anymore. Anybody know? Thanks!

Shampoo, make-up, suntan lotion, and contact lens stuff are perfectly okay. Many travelers on short trips don't check any luggage. Even nail clippers (including those with nail files) and safety razors (including disposable razors) are okay -- but don't bring anything with a pointy blade.

You could bring it on, but why would you want to? I used to do the same thing, then I started thinking about it. If my bags were lost, what would I need to have the most, my shampoo or my clothes? You can go to any store anywhere and purchase shampoos and soaps, but clothing that you like, in your size and color is a bit harder to find and more expensive. So now I try to take in my carry-on as much clothing as I can. If you're worried about spills, put the bottles in zip lock bags or you could tape them shut.

Thanks for the advice. I know I will want some of it with me because we arrive early in the AM and we plan on swimming before we can check into our hotel room. The kids will definately need suntan lotion!!

What I do is buy those travel-size containers and I put some of the stuff I like the most, shampoo, conditioner, suntan lotion in them and then put those in the carry-on and then I always put them in Ziploc bags in case of spills (I also include my bathing suit and change of clothes in my carry-on). The larger bottles I put in my checked luggage also in Ziploc bags. My toiletry bag is too heavy to carry so I put that in my checked bag. I have one that hangs over the door so I can fit everything in it. HTH :cool1: 28 days and counting . . . :moped:

I have a nice little Samsonite rolling carry-on that I carry stuff that can't be easily replaced - like jewelry, cameras, makeup, etc. It also has enough room to stow my purse in. So I roll that and carry my laptop - no problems. And before you start asking why would you want to carry a laptop - I'm in business for myself and I can't go a week or more without being able to stay in touch! As far as shampoo and spillables - they go in my checked piece in a leakproof hanging pouch that attaches inside the luggage.

This is what we carry-on with us...dh has the camera/electronic stuff in one bag. I have a large tote bag with...meds, bathing suits, clean undies, brush, suntan lotion, passes, money, book, tee shirt for either wearing after swimming or sleeping if we don't get our bags, toothbrush, toothpaste, and deod. I carry my dh's extra clothing also. Dd has her extra stuff in hers. It really doesn't take up much room and I have never been stuck without the things I need.

I saw another poster said that disposable razors and the like were ok in a carry on. I have not tried with razors but when I had an eyeliner pencil sharpener in my carry on it was confiscated. So if you want to be sure to have items like that it might be a good idea to put them in checked luggage.

We each have our own carryone and everyone has a rolled up a pair of underwear, a clean shirt and socks. Whats packed is everything we would need if our luggage was lost for a day or so.
I've travelled extensively since 9/11 and never had any problem. Do little sizes of everything and seal them in ziplocks. :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsboy: :earsgirl:
