Hello
I know you can bring alcohol on board Disney cruises IF it is in your carry on luggage. But can you carry alcohol back on the ship from a port?
If we buy a case of beer in Mexico can I carry right on? Do I have to put it in a bag?

Also is there a place to buy alcohol near the port in Cozimel?

Yes, no idea on bag, but we carried on in just a shopping bag, yes - there is a duty free shop right at the end of the pier.

As an aside, some places will offer delivery to the ship. DCL does not accept these deliveries, you will have to carry it on board yourself.

I have observed people bringing on cases of beer in both Nassau and Key West, not bagged at all.

Can you drink what you buy in your stateroom or is it held until the end like on other lines?

I'm first time cruiser but from what I have read you are not suppose to consume it outside your state room. But I keep reading about people who bring their own travel mugs or tervis mugs, so I'm thinking pour a beer in that and walk around. it will tie my DH as he gets from the room to the bar. lol:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yes, you can have it in your room. DCL's policy is any alcoholic beverages you bring onboard must be consumed in your room, not the public spaces (dining rooms, bars). However, you can bring a bottle of wine to the dining room (for a corkage fee) for dinner.

Any duty-free booze you buy onboard will be held until the end of the cruise, however.

Yes, Grand Cayman is one of these ports. I believe it is the only one on the Eastern/Western itineraries. Not sure about Med ports, Alaskan ports.

Thanks good to know! I may bring some of the local Nassau flavor back with me next year then!

For sure you can bring alcohol onboard at any port. However you can only drink the alcohol on board that was purchased in the same country in which you boarded. So if you do the carribean out of miami or port canaveral and stop at key west you can buy booze and bring it on board right into your state room. If however you stop at grand cayman, it is duty free and will be held on board until the end of the cruise.

This isn't true on DCL. Grand Cayman is a bad example, as there duty free alcohol purchases in port must be delivered to the ship from the shop where you buy it (that's their law), and DCL doesn't accept private deliveries in foreign ports.

But, you can purchase that bottle of rum (or whatever) in Cozumel or Nassau (or elsewhere), and bring it onboard with you, to be consumed in your room. It will not have to be turned over on the ship to be returned to you at the end of the cruise (as on many other cruiselines).

Also in Europe. Just off the EBTA and was able to purchase a bottle of Madeira from the Madeira wine lodge booth in the terminal building and a bottle of red wine from the Duty Free shop in the terminal bldg. in Malaga. Brought both aboard with no trouble.

Any duty free alcohol has to go straight from the shop to the ship (probably other merchandise too, but not sure). Just buy it when going back to the ship. My dh bough rum in GC, was escorted to the pier, and then walked on to the ship with it and took it to our cabin. DCL did not hold it.

Yes, I've read that there are a few shops close to the port that will escort the alcohol to the pier and then hand it over to you. But, there are other shops elsewhere that don't (can't) do that. Basically, an individual cannot purchase duty-free alcohol in Grand Cayman and transport it directly back to the ship.

But, in other ports (US or foreign) you can purchase duty-free alcohol and bring it back on board with no problem, to be consumed in your room. Be aware, that any "left-overs" will need to be declared (if you are over your maximum allowable) once you return to the US.

Do you know what the maximum duty free alcohol is per person?
Thanks!

Sorry I guess I was misinformed myself. I have puchased alcohol in Key West, to be consumed in our room, but was told by guest services that that is NOT the case for any of the foreign ports. We were advised not to buy alcohol in Mexico be because the ship would hold it to be returned at the end of our trip. Wow thats really too bad, I will for sure double check next time.

It has to do with what the policies are in regard to what beverages can be brought onboard for personal consumption on any given cruise line.

On those cruise lines that don't allow hard liquor (only allow - typically - one bottle of wine per person), then alcohol purchased in port and brought back to the ship would be held until the last night.

On DCL, with their very liberal beverage policy, you can bring onboard whatever beverages you wish (on embarkation as well as in port). The only alcoholic beverages that will be held until the end of cruise would be any that you purchased onboard at the duty-free shop.

Correct. We have purchased Kahlua in Mexico a few times and were able to bring it onboard and keep it in our room with no problem. They scan your bags and purchases when you get back onboard from port so they know what you have. We have never been asked to turn over booze bought in port to be held until the end of the cruise.

As mentioned earlier, if you purchase booze in the ONBOARD duty free shop they will hold it until the last night of the cruise and then deliver it to your cabin.
