Can you bring a cane on rides?

My Mom wants to try to use her cane this year while walking around the parks and we were wondering if there are any limitations on her bringing it on rides with her. She won't be doing any of the thrill rides. TIA.

Absolutely. Unlike other parks, Disney does not have areas to put bags/other items. You take it with you on rides. Even rides like Rock'n Rollercoaster you put your stuff at your feet. If it won't fit, you can leave it on the unload platform. If she needs a cane for mobility you might want to consider using a wheelchair since there is a lot of walking.

One other note: Sometimes people with mobility problems find the regular boarding area very difficult to navigate (particularly if there are load gates). If this is a concern, talk to guest relations so they can see what accommodations can be made. In situations like that we typically let people board in the wheelchair boarding area where there are no load gates to maneuver through.

Good suggestion.
For the OP, if you go to the disABILITIES FAQs thread, post #6 about Guest Assistance Cards will be helpful for you.

You may also want to look at post #2 of that thread, which has information about renting wheelchairs and ECVs, as well as a link to a thread about distances people estimated they walked in a day at the parks.

Thanks for the help.

My mom has no interest in a ECV. She doesn't drive and has no desire to try to manuever an ECV through lots of people.

Last trip we rented a wheelchair for her but she didn't like it because being pushed all the time made her feel like an invalid. She can walk but she just gets unsteady sometimes which is why she likes the cane. Back when we used a stroller she used to like to be the one pushing it because it helped to steady her. I think we may do a couple days with the cane and then rent a wheelchair for the end of the trip.

They do insist on taking the cane from you on many of the rides and leaving it at the boarding/disembarking station. The only problem with this is that when it is time to disembark, there may be no one to go fetch your cane so you can use it to get out of the ride vehicle.
I solved that problem by buying a collapsible cane. I pull it apart, fold it up, and stow it in the pocket provided for loose items (even in Soaring!). This type of cane is also terrific for taking on airplanes, since the flight attendants don't insist on taking it away from you and tucking it away up front.
The cane I use is the Hugo, which can be adjusted for people from 5' to 6'5" and can hold up to 550 pounds. It retails for about $30 and can be ordered on line. It comes with a nice little case.
You can even buy interchangeable cane handles if you want variety. I bought a spare one at WalMart.

Basically they let you take the cane with you if it is not a safety issue. Some canes fold up but if it could be thrown out of the ride then they will hold it for you at the loading dock. It is up to the CMs and management on what rides allow canes onto rides. It does not have to be a wild ride if it is something where a guest could accidently drop the cane out of the ride vehicle.

You could get her a wheelchair and load the seat with purses and stuff then let her push the wheelchair as that is what I do if I do not have the ECV with me.
