Can you believe this?

Getting someone ice or a glass of water or even offering a wet towel is treating him like he was critically ill? Where we live that's common courtesy.

Your husband puked after getting off a ride that has warnings against motion sickness and it was a hot day. I think it is unreasonable for you to expect a CM let alone multiple CMs :scared1: to take care of you like he was critically ill. If he had chest pains or some serious ailment than that is a different story. I think you way overreacted.

B.

Number one, she said her husband rarely gets nauseated. I assume it wasn't like him to get ill after a thrill ride. Number two, chest pain is not always the only sign of a heart attack. You can feel flu like and actually be having a heart attack. She did not say that she wanted him treated like he was critically ill. She was very worried and wanted a bit of assistance or guidance. I read that she wanted some water. Geez. Also, to the CM from FOTLK. I would really hope that in the case of a missing child that guest needs would come before standard CM operational duties, like unloading the theater.

So... He just go off a roller coaster it's really hot and he puked . Logically, he is probably having a heart attack??? Read the post again. She wanted the CM to go and fetch her water, ice and pepto bismal. She was also suprised that there isn't a protocol for another CM to come and assist her with her "sick" husband. Maybe they should have landed a helicopter in the middle of the AK and evacuated him to the nearest ER. Give me a break. It wasn't like the CM did nothing she did sit with him while the OP went and got water. The husband drank the water and felt better, imagine that. It is amazing what people expect of some people at Disney World. If there was truly something wrong with her husband Disney would do absolutely everything they could to make sure he was taken care. The CM made the absolute right call in this situation and to cut the CM down for that is not right.

Some people have compassion and empathy for other human beings. Others do not or have very little. I don't think it can necessarily be taught.

I think part of the problem is that the typically young CM's just don't have any perception of how bad a lost child can be, and that they may not just turn up.

I don't see anywhere that the CM in this case was young. :confused3 I'm just not sure what that has to do with anything.

I could see how you would be confused, those things tend to happen when you jump into the middle of a thread without reading it for context. The original comment I made was about folks who overblow an already scary situation by pointing out all of the horrible things that can happen, when in fact those horrible things have never happened at WDW. We do tend to go off into tangents, you might want to start over.

I absolutely didn't jump into the middle of the thread. I read each and every post and actually stood up for you at one point. Maybe you should go back and read. I know what your original comment was. But you started to go on and on about how parents should prepare their children before going to WDW in case they get lost. You went on about this as if the parents in the OP didn't do that or as if someone was arguing that point with you. They weren't. So my question was, who are you arguing with? :confused3

I'm definitely not trying to make you sound wrong or overly worried, but I'm just trying to inject a little CM perspective into the discussion to let you know that we're not apathetic or uncaring (not a wholly accurate statement of course, but that's the majority of our CMs, I assure you), just that sometimes our needs as cast do conflict with the needs of guests and it happens in unfortunate ways at times.

Well, when the needs of the cast conflict with the needs of the guest who has lost their child, I really hope that Disney has trained you to consider the needs of the guest FIRST! I don't see this as an excuse at all. Sure, the CMs are busy but this is a crisis situation. Drop what you are doing and help!

How the heck would you or any CM know at that moment that this man was not having a heart attack? He very easily could have been given the circumstances that you just layed out. Roller coaster + vomitting + heat could very well = heart attack. I would absolutely expect if I was worried that I or someone in my party was having a heart attack that a CM would respond. And I'm sure this is protocol. The PP wasn't asking for royal treatment. She was asking for some ice or water or pepto bismal.

I don't think that the CMs should run around fetching ice water for every person that comes off of a ride feeling a little sick. I imagine dozens if not hundreds of people get off of Disney rides feeling a little sick each day. If that posters hubby was violently ill the thing to to would be to take him to the first aide center. If it was thought he was having some sort of attack, then the medical staff should have been alerted. I'm glad this poster's husband wasn't suffering form something more serious than motion sickness, but I would not expect a CM to sit with a member of my family while I went to get ice water. Not every CM is medicaly trained, and leaving someone who is ill in their care seems like a bad thing for both the sick person and the CM, who could then be blamed if something was indeed seriously wrong.

I just want to add that I am not heartless, and I would hope that if someone has a true emergency at Disney that they don't hesitate to call on a CM, and that the CMs should respond properly. But it does need to be a true emergency, like a missing child, or a medical emergency. I just don't think we can call feeling ill when getting off of a ride an emergency. But if you think it is an emergency, then tell the CM it is one. If a medical problem can be solved with pepto and ice-water, than it is really not a medical emergency.

OP--I do hope your sister gets some assurance that what happened to her is not acceptable, and that the CMs who brushed her off will be retrained at the least. I can't imagine loosing a child in a Disney mob, and being told not to worry. How could you not worry?

I don't think we are reading the same posts at all. I'm not sure who said that CMs should provide ice water to every person that feels nauseated in WDW? :confused3 In the case we are responding too, it is clear that the poster thought that this very well could be an emergency situation. How was she supposed to get her DH to first aid? Pick him up and carry him? Absolutely in cases like this, medical staff should have been alerted. The PP approached a CM and then it was up to the CM to alert them. The PP did not ask the CM to sit with her DH until the CM refused to offer her help of any kind. It's not unreasonable that the PP wouldn't want to leave her DH alone if she thought he was having a medical emergency. You act like it's a huge deal for CMs who are just walking around to attend to guests. Isn't that usually the job of the CMs who are floating?

It doesns't sound to me like that poster thought it was an emergency. She said she just asked the CM for ice water and pepto. She didn't ask for any other assistance. If she thought her husband was seriously ill and in need of medical aide, she should had the CM call for help, not just requested ice water.

When we were in Blizzard beach Aug 2007 my son decided to go into the pool without me knowing it. I thought he was with me and in one split second I couldn't find him. It was really crowded. there was a security guard nearby and I immediately went to him for help. His response was, "Don;t worry mom. I'm sure he is having a blast somewhere!". I was a bit shocked and realized that he really wasn't going to help me. I started looking myself but didn't go too far and finally he came up to me out of nowhere and said didn't you see me in the pool mom? Ahhhh! I was ready to scream!

What a terrible reaction by that cast member. That CM needs to learn that a missing child is way more important than anything else. That is such a scary situation. I'm so glad that they found him though.

Well, I guess the problem lies in that we've read the post differently. It seemed to me that the PP was indeed quite concerned about her DH because he was acting out of character and was ill. I really doubt she would get a CM involved simply because he was thirsty.

IF someone was asking for pepto and water I would not consider it an emergency. If you need medical help you need to make it clear to the CM.

"I need to get my husband to first aid for medical treatment and need help to do so. This is very unusual for him to get sick."

Thank goodness the husband did not have a true medical emergency. Looking for water and pepto would have wasted valuable time. I am amazed the CM stayed with him while you looked given he is not medically trained. He should have asked if you wanted the medical team.

She said I just knew they were thinking "if you didn't have that many kids you probably wouldn't lose one":)

If she is a bad mom for losing one of six, I must be a terrible mom for losing one of ONE! I feel for her, it was the most terrifying time of my life and we weren't even at Disney! We were at Celebration City in Branson, MO!

I am really suprised the CM wasn't more responsive!

I posted above as well about losing one and I only have one to watch! It happened so fast. Must have looked away for a second and he took off for the pool. He said he thought I knew he was going there....only 7 at the time too and cannot swim. I can still feel the panic!

Usually, I would think unless someone is clutching their chest or exclaiming they can't breath or other extreme signs of severe illness, I think most people do what she was trying to do and sit the person down, get them some water and try to distinguish if it IS something more. She did nothing wrong asking a CM for a glass of water for her husband! And only after not getting that much help she asked if she could sit with him while SHE went to get the water! If I or I am sure alot of other people were walking by and she asked me to get her husband some water you can be darn sure I would have.

A CM rendering medical aid (administering water and/or pepto is medical aid) while not medically trained would have been a liability for both the CM and Disney. If she thought he needed medical care she should have said "Call an ambulance!" not "bring some pepto."

I am also amazed that the CM waited with the DH while she went to get water. The CM and Disney could have been held responsible if something happened.

I got lost getting off the Dumbo ride about 30 years ago (probably 6 or 7 at the time). One of the characters passing by (Brer Bear) saw me freaking out so he and a CM took me to the magic shop on Main St. The magician did tricks for me until they found my parents. They were a nervous wreck when they got there and I was completely content there in the magic shop.

I'll bet it does happen a lot but the CMs need to understand that it doesn't necessarily happen to that parent a lot.

And I do think that's the point. The CM should have offered to get some assistance or given the guests their options for medical treatment, not simply say, "I'm not allowed to give you water." Heck, if I cut my finger and needed a band-aid and approached a CM, I would expect for them to help me and this situation was worse than a boo-boo. The CMs shouldn't just act like they don't care. I assume they are trained to deal with a variety of situations, emergency or not.

Well, I know that at the mall I work at we are not allowed to ask if someone wants an ambulance. Unfortunately, that is now seen as offering to pay for that ambulance. Just another way sue happy people have ruined what should be a compassionate exchange between people. The injured or ill party has to specify what kind of aid they want, unless it is an obvious emergency. Maybe it is similar at Disney. :confused3
