Can you add memory to a laptop like you can a PC?

We just added memory to our old PC and I can't believe how much faster it is. My laptop has been dragging along and I was wondering if we could add memory to that. If not, I have to figure out a way to speed it up, probably taking a lot of pictures off of it.

Yes you can but you probably want to take it to a shop to have it done. Taking a laptop apart is a lot harder than a PC.

You just want to make sure that you purchase the proper memory for you laptop. Patriotmemory dot com has a great tool to tell you what type you need (and it doesn't have to be teir brand, just the DDR 2 500 mhz etc etc )

I checked this site and they didn't have what I needed for my computer so I ordered some from the company I used for our PC. Thanks though.

That's not true - at least not in the later models, since about 2000, and I suppose depending on the company. Like bdoyledimou says below, it's just an opening underneath, like the door to putting in batteries in a toy, only you unscrew it. Pop in the memory. Just make sure you don't touch the memory with your hands.

Correction: The possible a shock from static electricity when the fingers touch the memory can short circuit the memory. You have to wrap plastic wrap around your fingers as you slide the memory in.

That is where I got the memory, thanks. I am going from 1GB to 2 GB so that should help the speed of this thing.

I don't know how the memory is inserted in desktops, but in laptops, make sure you hear a click when you snap in the memory. They are designed in such a way that you have to listen for the click to know they are inserted all the way in.

Bought mine on Ebay paid about $10/ GB was simple 2 screws and take of little door, pop old ram, pop in new, replace door. Takes less than 5 min ram can only go in 1 way so it's hard to screw it up.

Have you tried a disk cleanup and a defrag? If you haven't done one in a while it could be causing a little slow down, especially if pictures are fragmented. I use a free utility called ccleaner.com to cleanup the disk and get rid of temp files, cookies, etc. Good luck.

OP, it's a shock from static electricity that may short out the memory as you pick it, not oil from greasy fingers. Unlikely to happen in the summer, but wrap your fingers anyway when sliding one in.
