can you add DDP later to reservations?

I am wondering if you can add the DDP to your reservation if you decide to add it later? Is there a fee for changing the reservation? Also, I know when you call to make your dining reservations they ask if you are on the DDP. If you make the reservation and then add the DDP do you need to call them and let them know that you now have the plan?

Thanks to anyone who can help answer my questions.

I don't know the answer to the first part of your post, but the answer to this is NO. Actually, the only person who really needs to know whether or not you are on the DDP is your server. I know they ask, and they'll probably ask again when you check in at the host desk, but nothing matters except how the server bills the meals.

There's no need to call them back -- it's just a waste of your time and theirs.

The Dining Plan must be part of a qualifying Magic Your Way Package (or part of a DVC points reservation at a DVC resort). So effectively what you're asking in the first part of your post is whether you can change your reservation from whatever you have now, to a qualifying package, and that will depend on (1) what your current reservation is, and (2) whether there is availability in a qualifying package at the time you try to make the change. Generally, the answer will be yes, as long as you make the change long enough beforehand, but again there may be some complications regarding your current reservation, including, perhaps, a penalty or change fee (though Disney would generally waive it if you're adding on something that will end up making your entire package more expensive overall). Most notably, you may lose a discounted rate that you have on your current reservation (since only a very limited number of only lightly discounted rates qualify for the Dining Plan).

Not sure if this will totally answer your question. However last year we had a room only reservation that I had book the previous July. I had to make a deposit of one night stay. When free dining was annouced it was for the time frame I had previously booked. So when I phoned, what they did was cancelled my existing reservation. Credited my credit card for my one night stay then booked the package (hotel, tickets and dining plan. Yes we lost out CAA discount on the room). They then charged my visa the $200 deposit. No they cannot transfer the funds from an existing room only reservation to the package reservation because they told me it is actually handled by two different companies.

We had a package booked and later called and added dining to it with no problem. We were about 3 months out at the time though I don't know if there would be fees if you did it closer to the trip.

I was actually just calling about this today, and when I made dining reservations I asked about it as well. I have a magic you way package, room, DME, tickets with park hopper, waterpark fun and more..the whole thing. The guy I talked to on the phone today said that I could add mine up to 3 days before my vacation and also that there are no fees for UPGRADING a package, just for downgrading. So, if you have a MYW package, there you go..if not, sounds like it'll be a pretty hefty upgrade.
