Can we split meals?

First off, my husband and I haven’t been to Disney in nearly 5 years. I know a lot has change. Neither of us eat huge meals at any time. We have both lost weight and eat very healthy. We will not be doing a dining plan on our trip next year. I have spotted a few sit down meals that we would both enjoy but not with both of us ordering our own meal. A lot would be wasted. Is this allowed? Will the restaurants give us a hard time? Thank for any input.

You shouldn't encounter any problems anywhere. DH and I just went to Skipper Canteen last month, and we didn't even order an entrée. We ordered several apps and shared those. 99% of WDW restaurants will not even blink an eye.

You can't share at buffet or all you care to eat restaurants (Crystal Palace, Ohana, Garden Grill, etc.), but that's about it. Don't expect huge meals to be served to one person, though. Disney isn't Cracker Barrel. When people talk about their Disney meals being huge, they're usually talking about all you care to eat places or buffets.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the input. We will not be doing any buffets as once again, we just don’t eat like that. Thanks again...

As others have said, sharing is allowed at ala carte restaurants. But do watch the portion sizes. Google for some pictures of things you’re interested in to see what the serving size looks like. And, while you’re eating healthy foods, remember that you’ll be walking a ton on your trip so you may need more food than is typical. Last time we were there, I was losing weight. We were on the dining plan and I was sharing my food with my 2 year old. I ate whatever I wanted, including dessert, and still lost a small amount of weight that week.

Now, if you were opting for one entree and some kind of appetizer (a nice salad perhaps?), I would think that could be enough for two.

We travel in packs and a whole order of anything is too much for me (a half of a burger and fries is plenty for me) so I usually split with someone. It's a good idea to plan to split whatever you order, and if you are still hungry there are tons of places to get a lighter snack.

My grown son and I often split or I get an appetizer and a salad or soup instead of an entre. I also eat kid's meals at QS and they are normally more than enough.

My DH and I find the the portions at most of the WDW restaurants to be extremely large, not just the buffets. We always split an entree or appetizers and find that there is no way we can eat more than about one shared meal and maybe a small snack (or split small QS item) while we are there. The other thing I always warn people about is that it is extremely uncomfortable to tour the parks when you overeat.

I agree. I don't think I've ever heard people refer to the portion sizes at buffets or AYCTE in any regard - they're not really portions since you're making them yourself. (Except Ohana, I'll concede - they do bring a lot of food there)

I find it greatly depends on the restaurant. Signatures are smaller portions. T-Rex has gigantic portions. There have also been recent reports of shrinking serving sizes (which is why I recommended a google search of specific dishes to decide). Someone posted a picture of a small portion of chicken parmigiana at Mama Melrose. It would not be enough for two, in my opinion.

This is pretty much how I eat. I find the portions to be huge, even at the signatures.

Thanks for posting this! This is the first time we are not getting the dining plan and was planning on splitting dinner entrees with my husband. I had gastric bypass a year ago so even small portion sizes are no big deal. I was worried about only ordering one entree and asking for a plate to share and getting the side eye. Or having to tell everyone within ear shot I had surgery.

As long as the meal is not any type of "all you care to eat", there's no problem with sharing, other than at Via Napoli. They do not allow two diners to split a meal at all when using the DDP.

We actually find some of the character buffets to be great for light eaters, as you can get a nice balance of fruit, soup, salad, etc. and we choose our portions (whereas at many other places it’s waaay too much food.) Not everyone eating at the buffets needs to be rolled home :rotfl2: . It’s expensive, but we are usually paying for the character experience over any volume of food.

My husband and I typically split an appetizer and an entree for a table service meal at WDW. If there is an exceptional dessert, we might split that also. We are bringing our grandsons (6,6,&8), along with their parents, in February. They live in London and are used to smaller serving sizes. They consistently split 2 or 3 entrees between the whole family when the are visiting the states. That is the plan for this upcoming visit.

You and you husband might enjoy some of the lounges and other places that specialize in "Small Plates" Tutto Gusto in Epcot's Italy Pavilion, The Brown Derby Lounge in Hollywood Studios, The Nomad Lounge in AK, and Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar in Disney Springs are examples. There are several more. We love to go to these locations to relax and share these tappas style offerings.

I was going to post something similar. My husband and I have lost and maintained a large weight loss. Buffets for breakfast are perfect. Lots of fruits and eggs. Boma for dinner is awesome. Lots of healthy salads choices. And we sample other interesting dishes. We stay away from things like prime rib and white carbohydrates.
