Can we? Should we? A Spring 2009 PTR - New 5/6 - The TR has begun!

Amy,

thanks for the 98 pictures...makes me want to go and look at my trip pictures form 9/98 I was probably 10 pds lighter too? but hey the flabby tummy now is my 'Mommy Tatoo" right? I've had 4 kids and the 1st two were twins.

Maybe I'll post a comparrison from our trip....later.

Plans....things are coming together:thumbsup2

Glad you have all your times & such finally. Looking forward to more.

J-

Mommy tatoo.... :rotfl2:

I'd love to see your 98 comparison!

Personally, if I had to choose between Spectro and Fantasmic!, I'd take Spectro any day! ::yes::

Kathy

DH & I went out for dinner last night and that's the same conclusion we came to. He actually sounded interested in Spectro!! And none of us are interested in being trampled by a bunch of crazed lunatics!:crowded:

We'll keep our FDP ADR for the last night, but I'll be canceling the ADR on 4/30 and we'll plan on Spectro that night!! I can't wait!

Yay for May hours! :cool1:

I keep going back and forth on Fantasmic. We've never seen it, but I've heard such horror stories about the wait and then trying to get a seat. It is scheduled for the day we plan to go to HS, but we'll see what happens.

I'm bummed that Spectro isn't happening on our MK day. :(

I'm sure you don't want to hear this suggestion, but you might want to switch your MK & DHS days... I am going to avoid DHS entirely on the F! days - I've heard that the crowds are awful ALL DAY! If you aren't going to see F! - I'd avoid DHS all together.

Anyone know about the Sea Raycers?

DH & I were talking about finding something special to do for Dniece & Dnephew... Sea Raycers came to mind. I have read that you have to be 16 to drive (Dnephew is 16) and that you have to be 12 to drive (Dniece is 13). Which is accurate? I'm sure DBIL could ride with Dniece... Do you think that would be a fun surprise for two teenagers?

Other suggestions?

I really want to be at MK on my birthday, which is why I have the days scheduled as they are. But, I may have to look at everything again. I wouldn't mind being at Epcot for my birthday either.

Ahhh.... The birthday... you definitely want that to be a special day! Mickey must have forgotten it was your birthday when he scheduled the Spectros for that week! :rotfl:

I don't know what the age limit is for the Sea Raycers but have you thought about renting a boat for all of you to go on? We did that on Bay Lake/7 Seas Lagoon in 2005 and it was a blast.

You must be 12+ to drive if an adult is a passenger with you, and 16+ (with a driver's license) to drive alone.

I think its a great idea! We rented them last year and we had a blast!

:rotfl: I know, right?!

I'm a bit afraid of being trapped on a boat with Alex... DBIL's girlfriend is planning a bunch of stuff for the short day and a half that we are visiting them before Disney... a couple of them involve boats - and alligators. :scared1:

Thanks Kathy! That's helpful. I'm not sure DBIL would let Dniece (13) drive around by herself even if it were allowed. That will work out perfectly! :thumbsup2 Now we'll just have to get DBIL's blessing.

Yesterday I emailed DBIL's girlfriend (Karen) with our proposed itinerary and ADRs. They said to plan whatever and to include them on any ADRs we made. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't want to spend that much money on food, so I attached links to the menus on allears.

Karen emailed me back this morning and loved everything!! She said, "That sounds perfect.....I'd rather eat at restaurants than counter service so your itinerary is great. I've never been to Animal Kingdom and haven't been to Epcot in 20 years...Jeff is telling me how much he likes Epcot and the kids talked about Hollywood Studios so you've done a fantastic job. We are all looking forward to it very much. Karen :):)"

 (I'm so happy the banana is back!)

So as a quick review, here's what we are doing during the 3 days Jeff, Karen and the kids are with us:

Day 1: (Thurs. 4/30):
Animal Kingdom (probably not at rope drop since they will be driving from about 2-3 hours away - but we might head over before they arrive)/CS lunch/break (maybe Sea Raycers)/WCC at 5:30/MK for Spectro and/or Wishes!

Day 2: (Friday 5/1):
DHS morning/50s PTC lunch at 12:25/nothing specific planned after lunch - break?/more MK?

Day 3: (Saturday 5/2):
Epcot at rope drop/Teppan Edo at 12:00/break??/Le Cellier at 4:30/Illuminations?? They head home at some point...

I'm very excited for their visit!! (had to use one more banana)

Fun plans while DBIL and his girlfriend are with you -- I really think you will have a blast with them at Teppan Edo!

just wanted to ditto in, that sounds like a great idea. The only time I've done them was back in 93, when DH and were dating. But I remember it was fun and it was at CBR I still have the reciept.

That is so WONDERFUL to hear they are all :thumbsup2 with the plans. Excellent job Amy!

I'm just glad that they are happy with what I've put together! They kept saying "anything is OK" but I didn't want them to show up and not be on board... glad to have the seal of approval! :thumbsup2

That's so great that she's happy with your plans - makes everything so much easier. :thumbsup2

I feel relieved. :goodvibes

I'm hopeful that the Sea Raycers will work out - we just need to talk with DBIL to make sure he's OK with it. I think it's a given that the kids will like them. ::yes::

Since the topic of developmental delays, early intervention & speech therapy has come up with some of my DIS-friends, I thought I'd post an update on what's been going on with us.

As you know, our son, Alex, was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, a form of autism when he was 2. He has received years of intensive therapy, speech, occupational, behavioral, social, educational... He is now 8 and doing well - still involved in a lot of therapy and structured programs. Zachary is 3 years younger, currently 5. Since the origin of autism is unknown, we have kept a close eye on Zachary from early on. We had him evaluated twice through early intervention (in NH early intervention covers children birth to age 3 who have a developmental delay of 33% or more). Each time we were told that he is right on track. :thumbsup2

Last year we started noticing some social issues at school - he wasn't exactly fitting in with the other kids. He wasn't always "getting" what the other kids were talking about. We made the decision to give him an extra year of preschool and hoped that what we were seeing was due to his age - he has a September birthday and our school cutoff is September 30th. He was as much as 11 3/4 months younger than his class mates.

Zachary is also an "active" boy with strong opinions. Some might say these are signs of ADHD... He has also shown some signs of obsessing on certain topics. For almost a year, everything was about lizards, then he moved on to space & now all he can talk about is the Wii & Mario. Some might say these are signs of autism... He also has some odd characteristics that we have attributed to learned behavior from his brother.

Just writing all of this down paints a clear picture of a problem... but it's not that simple. None of these things are a glaring problem - they are all very subtle issues. And the school year couldn't have gotten off to a better start - he is very popular with his classmates (a class of "older" 4 year olds who all turn 5 during the first half of the year - Zachary is the oldest). We were feeling pretty good about things...

Until... Alex had an appointment with his psychiatrist. I brought Zachary along, which wasn't unusual. The doctor had gotten to know both of them. One day she turns to me and says, "Have you had him evaluated?". :scared1:

After that sunk in, I started noticing some more red flags - temper tantums, obsessive interests, missing subtle social cues, not so great eye contact (an issue from early on that had been dismissed)... We were also noticing a lot of complaining.

I called and made an appointment right away at the hospital where Alex was diagnosed. They weren't accepting new patients, but said they would see Zachary - but our old doctor had left so we had to wait to get in with a different one. Luckily we got in with one of the doctors who has been there for a long time. I called in November?? and Zachary's appointment is March 9th.

In the meantime, I got him into one of the social groups where Alex goes (different group for younger kids) and started taking him to a social worker for play therapy. Not only does she work with kids with disabilities, but she also works with siblings of kids who have disabilities. A perfect fit for us!

Since starting therapy, the social worker has diagnosed Zachary with separation anxiety & general anxiety disorder. The poor little guy is stressed out!! This helped explain some of the rigid behavior and temper tantrums we were seeing. Plus much of his complaining was related to not wanting to go to school, not wanting to go to social group, etc. He always has a great time when he's there - he just has a hard time separating.

I feel good that he's getting the support he needs and am hopeful that it will help him. But we still have that appointment ahead of us...

I'm not sure what to expect - it wouldn't surprise me to have the doctor say that nothing is wrong. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that he has ADHD or have a confirmation of his anxiety issues. But it also wouldn't surprise me to hear that he has Asperger's syndrome (a high functioning form of autism).

I'll keep you posted on how things go... I have a meeting with his social worker on Wednesday - she wants to update me on how things are going before our March appointment for the evaluation.

I need a vacation!!!!! ;)

Next: How Alex is keeping us on our toes!

Thanks for the update on Zach. You're such a great mom to be so on top of everything. How frustrating to not be able to get an apt. until March! Please continue to keep us posted on everything. :goodvibes
