Can we? Should we? A Spring 2009 PTR - New 5/6 - The TR has begun!

OK - so I have this friend who I've known since 5th grade. She lives in the next town over from me, I babysat her daughter when she was younger, I babysit her brother's two boys now and these are the friends we went up north with in June. So a few months ago she mentions that her parents bought a DVC (never knew they were Disney people - they went once a few years ago, but that's all I ever heard about). They bought a place at the Animal Kingdom - and it must be pretty big. So she tells me that they are all going down at Thanksgiving (her family of 3, her parents and her brother's family of 4). As time has gone by I have asked her about her plans. They still haven't bought airline tickets, they still haven't bought park tickets, no ADRs, etc. No planning whatsoever!

I have talked with both her and her sister in law about it a few times since then. They both have the nerve to say that they aren't going to spend much time in the parks! :scared1: Apparently it's too expensive... :sad2:

So a couple days ago she calls me and the subject somehow changes to Disney. :confused3 She tells me she finally bought airline tickets. I again ask her about ADRs, MVMCP, park tickets, etc. She says they are going to play it by ear, she's worried about her daughter's lactose intolerance so she doesn't know what to do about ADRs. She says they want to go to the BBB - I remind her again to make an ADR. I also forward all of my food allergy info to her. Again, I tell her to get her tickets including MVMCP.

Yesterday she calls me all flustered - I think she finally got it! She's trying to figure out the park tickets and needs help - I think they decided to get 10 day no-expire park hoppers with water parks. (I guess they found some money. :rolleyes1) She and her DD are going back with her mother in April so, as I suggested, she was going to get enough days on her tickets now for both trips. Then I mentioned that it really wouldn't cost her more to get the full 10 days and maybe she could get a 3rd trip out of it - especially if they aren't going to spend much time in the parks!:rotfl: Now if I could just convince her to make some ADRs!!!

Ugh! I run into the same kind of thing a lot. People mention that they are going and I ask a few questions....and they never have much planned or even have knowledge. I'll say to them that Disney is a much different kind of vacation than they're used to. Then I'll offer that Disney World travel is a hobby of mine (hobby sounds much better then freakish addiction) and that I'd be more then happy to sit down with them and help. I have never once had someone take me up on it.

:scared1: People that don't plan or have the knowledge are the ones that ask what is the big deal about Disney and complain about long lines, say they couldn't find a place, to eat, and how they didn't have fun. A little planning goes a long way!

I told her to figure out what she wants to do and then call me - we'll see... :rolleyes1 I'm tempted to call and make an ADR for their DD at the BBB. But do you have to pay for that ahead of time?? I'll have to investigate a little bit.

EXACTLY - I'm sure I'll hear all about the crowds, long lines and bad meals when they get back! :rotfl:

Love your report so far. Super cute boys!

:welcome: Thanks for reading!

Amy your funny friend made me snicker....I really only have 1 major Disney-freak friend like me (off-line), but I have run across the ones out there who just have no idea....

I like your hobby Heidi! :rolleyes1 I've asked DH when can I officially begin planning the next one??? I need something else to do....

and I agree mrsksomeday, you take the time to do some planning and Disney can be a great and fun vacation, I just don't know how you can do it otherwise.

I've been chatting w/ a good friend from church about it (she has 6 kids:scared: ) and they'd like to go someday....after my chats about WDW I think she's scared...whoops!

I haven't heard from my friend again recently, but my caller ID shows that she called this morning when I wasn't home... wonder if she had another Disney question?? I love talking about it with her, of course, but I hope she gets her butt in gear soon!

Sorry I haven't posted in a few days... As the summer winds down we are even busier. Both kids finished their camps this week. DH is home for vacation next week and we have a couple of day trips planned - Water Country in Portsmouth, NH and Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH. I'll post pictures - at least of Canobie Lake Park - might not bring the camer to Water Country?? Back to the WDW PTR...

Who is going with us on this trip?

As of now, we are planning for this trip to be just the 4 of us. The last time DH & I went without other family joining us was in 1997. Since then we have had tag-alongs. In 2002 my mother joined us – which was great because Alex was a toddler and she was able to stay in and look after him a couple nights. Plus it worked out well for the baby swap- everyone always had a partner to ride with.

In 2006, our visit was combined with a visit to DH’s brother’s family in Sarasota. We flew into Tampa, with Gramma Nancy (DH’s mom), drove to Sarasota and stayed one night. The next day, we all (our family of 4, Gramma, DH’s brother’s family of 4) drove to Orlando where we checked into our dump of a hotel. (Our only bad timeshare exchange experience in Orlando. We waited too late to make our exchange.) We visited Disney for 2 days – I think we did a half day at each park? Then back to Sarasota to finish up our visit. Somewhere along the way we visited DH’s grandmother on the other coast… must have been after Orlando – then we returned to Sarasota to finish up the week and flew home from Tampa. It was more of a Florida trip, with a small visit to Disney rather than a Disney trip.

In 2007 we stayed the whole week in Orlando, but had visitors come Friday through Sunday. We spent Monday visiting DH’s grandmother on the east coast. We went to MNSSHP on Monday night and had the day Tuesday as just the 4 of us – and it was FANTASTIC! We loved visiting with our family, and even though they said to do what we wanted to do, I felt like I was hosting their visit and just couldn’t relax and do what I wanted to without worrying about everyone else having fun. Unfortunately for Zachary, he made out the worst in the deal. Since our niece and nephew were 12 & 15 we were trying to hit the rides they would like, which generally weren’t the rides that Zachary would like. Our last day and ½ was very laid back. We didn’t have a plan for the last day- it was our see what we want to see, catch the things we missed, revisit our favorites day. We even split up for parts of the day so each of the kids could do what they wanted to. It was great. This is how a vacation should be.

So for this trip, we want to just be the 4 of us. Of course we’ll have a touring plan, but more of a which park to visit on each day kind of plan, with priorities. This may change as we get closer and people learn about this trip – so far it’s top secret – DH & I are the only ones who know about it – and a few of my close friends…

Of course, for our little day trips next week, our mothers are each coming with us on one of the trips... we can't go anywhere alone... another reason we want to do WDW alone.

How did you like MNSSHP? I'm so looking forward to it!
I agree - family trips are nice but I LOVE it when it is just the four of us! Heaven!

MNSSHP was so much fun! We weren't there very late, only until 9pm, but we fully enjoyed the low crowds and fun Halloween atmosphere. The kids had a blast dressing up in their costumes and getting trick-or-treat candy. I am hoping that there will be a Pirate & Princess party when we are there in April because I would love to go. You guys will have a blast! It was well worth the price of admission. :thumbsup2

Amy,

I'm subscribing so I can come back later toniight and read. Your boys are ADORABLE. I cant wait to read about them. Catch up later!

Hi Amy,

sounds like many fun things to do in NH....can't wait to see more pictures!

I understand on the just your family unit going....we've done maybe 1 family vacation to the Dells w/out at least 1 set of Grnandparents or parent coming. I has it's pluses & minuses, but DH says for the next trip to Disney just us. :goodvibes

We had an interesting week... :rolleyes1 I'll put a big post together within the next few days to update you on our "vacation" week.

I'm a little scared about the latest Southwest airfare to be released - that along with another financial issue that popped up this week could prove to be problematic for our April trip... I'll fill you in soon.

The best SW prices seems to be $119 one way.

Hope everything is OK!

I'd take $119 - I think we are going to have to look at other options such as flying into Tampa, going Thursday - Thursday, or other airlines because SW only has the $287 refundable tickets available for the weekends in Febraury. I'm assuming it will be the same kind of thing for April because of school vacations. :confused3 I'll be watching what they do with those February rates over the next couple of months.

Last week DH was home so we could take some day trips and he could take Zachary to a parent/child soccer camp here in town. Zachary had come down with a little cold, but nothing too serious. Then Sunday night he was up half the night coughing – he didn’t sleep a wink between 12-3am! (And therefore, either did I.) I took him to the doctor on Monday and he had pneumonia! (It was a mild pneumonia caught early - before he even had a fever - possibly even bronchitis.) The doc put Zachary on Zithromax and said he would probably be fine in a couple days, but Monday was supposed to be our Canobie Lake Park trip. :sad2:

I babysit two little boys twice a week. Two weeks ago they sent the 3 year old to my house with a fever and cough… :scared1: hmmmm… Obviously I called and had them pick him up that day, but it’s quite obvious to me where the pneumonia came from. Alex was sad, but DH made it up to him by taking him to this fun place that has go carts and an arcade that he loves.

After juggling a few things around we decided to go to Canobie Lake Park on Friday. I called the mom of the boys I watch and asked her if her mother could watch the kids on Friday so we could take our trip. I normally wouldn’t do this, but I had no guilt since she was the one who sent the germs into my house in the first place. DH’s mom was working Thursday night (she works overnight as a nurse), but she wasn’t working Friday night so she still wanted to come with us.

Tuesday wasn’t very exciting, we had a bunch of appointments and I worked for a few hours at my bookkeeping job.

Wednesday was our trip to Water Country. :woohoo: My mom came along. It was 74 degrees and breezy. It would have been a lovely day for Canobie Lake Park, but we were going with the Easter Seals Autism Network so we had to go on Wednesday. It was a lot of fun, even though it was chilly at times. Does anyone know what Geronimo is? It’s the wedgie ride that goes straight down. DH, my mother and Alex all went on it!!!!!! It was so funny to watch. Alex was just at the 48 inch mark (actually just under but they were nice at the ticket counter) so he was one the smallest kids to ever go on Geronimo. Zachary was a bit of a dare devil too – he can be a bit nervous about these types of things, but he went down the “Double Dive Boggan” which is a mat ride that you go down head first. He was so proud of himself.

On Thursday I had the kids to watch, but Alex went with him autism mentor (they go out in the community and work on public behavioral skills) that day so DH took Zachary fishing.

Friday was finally our Canobie Lake Park day. It was 87 degrees that day – it would have been a perfect Water Country Day! :rotfl: It was PACKED! Fortunately they have a special needs access bracelet (similar to the GAC but more confusing to use). I’ll do another post just about this trip later.

We finished off our week with an uneventful weekend, shoe shopping, swimming lessons, etc. Today & tomorrow I’ll have a full house with my two kids plus the boys I watch then Alex goes back to school on Tuesday. :cool1: Zachary doesn’t start until the 8th.

The “news” that I was referring to in my last post is that on Wednesday afternoon the mom of the boys I watch called to tell me that she put them in day care. :headache: I totally understand but it still stinks for now. The little one, who is almost 2, is significantly speech delayed – he is talking at the 12-13 month level. The speech therapist recommended that he be in a child care situation where there are other kids his age. The same agency they are working with used to work with Alex when he was 2 and they told us the same thing so I know it is what’s best for him. I’m actually kind of “over” doing home child care anyways, I feel like I don’t always have the energy and patience I need for my own kids on the days they are here, but we’ve become accustom to the money so I’ll have to get another job. I was hoping to make it through one more year until Zachary goes to kindergarten because it is from 8:30-1:30 every day - much more convenient for a working mom. Luckily I have my bookkeeping skills that I’ve been using for the past two summers because otherwise I have been out of the real working world for 5 years and I’m sure I would be quite rusty. I’ve put a call into a woman I used to work with who opened her own company. I saw her in the grocery store probably a year ago and she told me that they are always looking for people to do payroll and other light bookkeeping for their client companies – hopefully that is still the case! Going to work now while Zachary is still in preschool will mean having to pay extra to keep him at school for extended day. Luckily they offer that option, but it is still something we hadn’t planned for. Plus I'm going to be sad when I miss field trips and other opportunities to go into the classroom. I really enjoy doing that so I'm hoping I don't have to work every day of the week and that there might be some flexibility in which days I work... can't I have it all?? :rolleyes1

How does this effect Disney? I don’t know yet. :confused3 This could be the best things to happen to me since I wasn’t happy doing what I was doing, but it could be bad news if I can’t make enough money to pay for the trip… Maybe not taking a trip in 2009 would take some of the pressure off of us to make it through this school year?? I will definitely keep you updated on my job search. Now I just have to go re-create my resume – I haven’t needed it since 1999. If only I could remember what I used to do… I'll take any pixie dust you want to send my way!

pixiedust:
Pixie dust for sure that you will find a great new position!
Best wishes!

I think flying Thursday to Thursday would be great. Less congestion and commotion at the airport and such.

I had my own job drama last week. I applied for a pt bookkeeping job on a whim....and was offered the position. Too bad it was the perfect addition to my bookkeeping "clients" but 5 years for now. I couldn't figure out child care for Liam so I had to decline the offer. At least my resume is now updated....good luck with yours.
I'm sure you can pick up a bookkeeping job that is the same hours as babysitting and earn more then twice the pay.
