We love Disney World. I love it. DS7 loves it. DS4 loves it. And DH loves us so he tolerates it. I want to go back! I just can’t help myself. Our last family trip was October 2007. My last trip was in April with my mom. We went for a long weekend and enjoyed a rain free day at the Epcot F&G Festival after two very wet days everywhere else in the world. We had a blast, but I kept thinking of my kids and how much fun it is to enjoy WDW through their eyes. As exhausting as it is, it is a blast. And I want to do it again. As soon as possible.
My plan has been to try to go every two years. (April was an extra added bonus.) Our October trip was great, we loved MNSSHP, but it was simply too early in the school year to be disrupting Alex’s (DS7) schedule. So since we decided we would not go in the fall again that left us with winter and spring school vacation weeks. Luckily our weeks fall a week later than most of the other school vacations and we should be able to avoid the HUGE crowds. Now the question becomes do we go in 2 ½ years in 2010 (probably DH’s preference) or in 1 ½ years in 2009 (obviously my preference). I’m trying my hardest to get him on board, and I think I’m almost there.
So let me introduce you to my family: (I'm going to bite the bullet this time and post face pics of my family!)

This is all of us at Story Land in NH in June.

Me, Amy, 34, SAHM, part time babysitter & bookkeeper. Love love love Disney! I have the personality of a perfectionist, but can’t pull it together long enough to actually be organized! Maybe that’s part of my obsession with trips to WDW – I seem to be able to keep myself pretty organized throughout the whole process. 5 adult trips to the world since 1997. 3 trips as a kid.

DH, Tim, 35, Solutions Engineer (computer stuff). Works really hard, travels around a lot for work. Puts up with me and my obsession. We’ve been married for almost 12 years. 4 trips as an adult (all with me) and 2 or 3 as a kid.

DS7, Alex, super bright kid. As he has been telling everyone since the last day of school, he is in second grade now. He loves to move fast – he rode Tower of Terror at least 10 times in October. He loves the “Yeti Ride” and will be tall enough for RnRC (and everything else – except driving his own Indy car) next time. Alex is living with autism. He was diagnosed with PDD-NOS right after his second birthday. It effects almost every part of his life, in good and bad ways.

DS4, Zachary, very sensitive and emotional kid. He always feels as though he is being treated unfairly. I am hoping that he is just having a hard time being 4? He will be 5 in September. He could be going into kindergarten (our cutoff date is September 30th) but we decided to “give him the gift of an extra year” of preschool. That’s how his school presents it anyways. That factor will come up again when I talk about how we can or can’t afford this trip later. His favorite attractions in October were Winnie the Pooh, Honey I shrunk the kids playground and Nemo. He refers to any amusement park of any type as Disney. He’ll be tall enough to ride a lot more rides next time, but I’m not sure if he’ll want to.

I’m starting this PTR 9 months (or maybe only 7) early in honor of mousescrapper and her 9 month pregnancy PTR that has recently turned into a full blown TR. I’ll try to post something interesting once a week until we get quite a bit closer to our trip.

DH and I were talking about it last night (the first time he has talked about the trip as though it really might happen) and he said, “Wow, April is a long time away.” Funny! But that’s exactly what I’m thinking! Then he mentioned something about February that made me think that could actually happen! We’ll see…

Coming up soon (not necessarily in this order):
• Why the “Can we, should we?” a spring 2009 PTR
• Who else will be going?
• Pros and Cons of February vs. April
• Budget
• The big airfare watch
• Where to stay
• What’s going on with ADRs?
• Some mini-TRs from our summer

I'm reading! Your boys are so cute. I'm also doing the big airfare watch for our trip.

I'm UNH class of '95 too! Did you guys live on campus? My 2 two years were in Sawyer and the last 2 in the Gables, building A.

No kidding!! That's too funny! I lived in Fairchild for the first two years (all girls :headache:). DH lived in Alexander the first year, at his fraternity house the second year, then we lived off campus together the last two years. He was an English Major, I started as a biology major and ended up as a Family & Consumer Studies major. What did you major in?

Fairchild you say....ummmm....I'll PM you.

My major was Tourism Planning and Development (there was 12 of us in the major!)

I'm glad you did...I know I hemmed and hawed on that whole picture thing...don't think DH is too thrilled...but it's so hard to tell a story w/out all the faces...still keeping w/ the whole middle name thing though.

Your family is beautiful! and your one skinny Mama!

I’m starting this PTR 9 months (or maybe only 7) early in honor of mousescrapper and her 9 month pregnancy PTR that has recently turned into a full blown TR.

I'm so honored;)

My major was Tourism Planning and Development (there was 12 of us in the major!)

Did we need to guess that? JK;) :goodvibes

I am so glad I saw this in your siggy line. I am in!!! I promissed myself no more subbing to PTR's and TR's here, but I had to read yours . You have a beautiful family, thank you so much for sharing the pictures.

So funny that we went to school together!!

Thanks for joining me! I think I'm going to post it "over there" too, but I don't want to get too overwhelmed with keeping it up in two places... I might just wait a little and then copy it over. Glad to finally share my pictures.

I'm so honored;)

Thanks for the kind words. DH doesn't know I posted pictures yet. :rolleyes1

I completely understand about being possibly overwhelmed with it being in more than one place. Sometimes I get worn out from trying to keep up :lmao:. That is why my ptr is only there for now. Once I get going with it, I will probably post it here too. I still love the DIS, I just love other places too.

I'm just glad you showed me the way over there. ;)

I haven't told DH I'm doing a PTR....so I think I beat you on that front!

:rotfl2:
My DH doesn't know I've started a PTR yet either... he never reads what I write, but he at least knew I was writing before. I think he'd really make fun of me to know it has already started.

I did tell him that I may have partied with one of my favorite DISers back in the day! He thought that was pretty cool. It's the most excited I've seen him about anything having to do with the DIS.

As I have said, we love Disney – well most of us do. I really don’t want to wait 2 ½ years to go back for another family trip, but can we afford to go back after only 1 ½ years? Our last trip was, how should I say this, totally out of our budget at the time. :rolleyes1 It went almost entirely on a credit card. And still isn’t paid off. :headache: However, we haven’t used our credit cards since that trip, or maybe Christmas. With the help of a big raise this year for DH, we have planned better and should be able to get through the fall birthday season and Christmas without having to use credit cards at all.

Another financial factor involved is tuition for a third year of preschool for DS4. He just makes the NH kindergarten cutoff of September 30th (his birthday is the 23rd), but he just isn’t ready. He seems very immature compared to his classmates and has some social awkwardness as well. We attribute it to his age compared to his classmates :hyper: as well as his brother’s autism. Alex is his closest role model socially, so I guess some of the behavior is to be expected, or so we are told. We will probably always worry, :worried: even when he’s in college, but for now we’ll give him the extra year, keep a close eye on him and hope for the best.

DH and I both have leased cars that are due to be turned in in January and February. DH has to buy this time around because of the new position he took at his company. He travels around a lot more than he used to and a lease wouldn’t work out with the mileage. My car should be easy – there are such good deals out there right now with the economy, I’ll just get a new lease with little or no money down. :thumbsup2

The last factor is the price of oil. We heat our home entirely with oil. Living in NH, that requires a lot of oil. Last year we paid $2.55 per gallon, for about 800 gallons. Luckily we locked in the price and were able to make budget payments over the year. This year’s rates are due out now. Two weeks ago the lady at the oil company told me the price would be $4.95 per gallon! :scared1: However, I called again today and she told me the contracts are delayed because the prices have dipped, so hopefully it won’t be that bad, but I certainly don’t expect it to be below $4.00 or even close to that. Luckily we didn’t use all 800 gallons, even though we had paid for them, so we had about a $700 credit to start this season. We thought about putting in a pellet stove in our fireplace, but many places that we checked were already backordered through December or even February! Since the stove will cost $3000-4000, plus the cost of wood pellets, we decided to wait another year, see where oil prices go, get through this year’s preschool tuition and revisit the idea early next spring. Plus, as we are starting to see, oil prices are also affecting airfare…
:sad2:
So that is why this PTR is the “can we, should we” PTR. I have told DH that I think we can swing this without the use of any credit cards. So now I am saving our pennies and carefully planning how we will use each of DH’s quarterly bonuses over the next 9 months. I expect Southwest will release April airfare around October, so that will be point of no return. And who knows, maybe I’ll get a great Southwest DING for some February airfare that we won’t be able to resist!! :confused3

Up next: February vs. April - pros & cons

I hope you're able to take the trip. And I hope airfare somehow goes down.

Your home heating costs are ridiculous. But I think they're ridiculous everywhere. My energy bill (electric and gas) was $410 just for June. And that's for an apartment :scared1:

What resorts are you considering?
