Can we check our bags at port if we're NOT using Disney transportation?

Our flight isn't until 5:00, so we're renting a car a going over to the Kennedy Space Center for the day. It would be great to send our luggage on over to the airport, but can we do that since we're not using Disney transportation to get to the airport?

Yes, we have never used DCL transfers and checked our luggage at the port both times. Just have to show your tickets and your ID as you would in the airport and off it goes in the luggage bins to the airport. Viola!! Easy as that!!

What airlines can you check your luggage w/ at the port?

Just one word of caution...we did this three or four times prior to 9/11 (always with American Airlines), and they lost our luggage on two or three of those occasions! Happily, it turned up eventually each time.

Some some airlines will check it and some won't? What about Southwest? Anybody know? Thanks. Oh, has anybody else's luggage been lost because of checking it early?
