Can tooth pain from trauma just "go away"?

From what I've come to understand, it can't/won't but I really wish someone could tell me it's possible...

I fainted Sunday morning and landed on my face on a hardwood floor.

I believe I fainted due to dehydration or low blood sugar, but I’m not sure. My doc thinks it was one of those two things. I haven’t gone in yet but my doc doesn’t seem that concerned given that I feel fine today.

My biggest concern right now is my teeth. My front two teeth have hurt like heck since the fall. My back teeth hurt but that pain went away after a few hours. My teeth do not appear loose or chipped but they are very sensitive to the touch and I can’t chew with them. This is not improved or worsened since I fell.

It is my front right tooth and the one next to it on the right.

I have dental insurance but it’s not very good, I have no paid time off from work and I know I *need* to go to a dentist but I want to be prepared. I have about $3400 in savings/emergency and that is all I have. $1250 of it was my entire wedding budget. I imagine all my money will be gone once I’m done at the dentist. I’ll probably need to take out a loan for the rest and cancel my wedding which is devastating on an entirely other level.

Everyone I have talked to and all the dental websites I have found indicate that there is NO WAY this kind of thing can just heal on it’s own and that one you damage a nerve in your teeth, you are looking at root canal.

So… has anyone here ever had tooth pain just up and go away? My tolerance for pain is pretty high so I’d prefer to hold off an expensive dental visit until I have absolutely have to.

FMIL says that if I damage the nerves very badly, my teeth would be turning dark by now, which they are not. She thinks I just bruised them and that this will just go away. Everyone else says I’m in for a root canal and possibly implants. I’m looking at around 5-6K in my area for this. Everything I have and then some. 

I’ve never even had so much as a cavity.

Well, I don't know if your tooth would be turning dark by now or not. I can tell you that my daughter fell flat on her face onto the hard wood floor. She broke her nose and damaged her front tooth as well. It wasn't until a year had passed that we realized the extent of the damage to her tooth. It did abscess.

So I would say you probably need to have it looked at. I know from experience how expensive the dental work is. Good luck.

DS was sitting on my lap a couple of years ago and threw his head back. He knocked one of my front teeth a little loose. It hurt for a few days and was sensitive for a few days more, but it did heal on its own.

I did go to the dentist, but he said everything was fine and just not to bite down on anything hard with for a while.

Best of luck to you...

Another kid's head knocked into my DS's two front teeth very hard in the schoolyard to the point that his teeth were a little loose. :guilty: He saw the dentist who showed me the gum above the teeth was black and blue. He said there was nothing much to do but wait and see, which we did and all turned out ok - his teeth didn't turn black and there were no further dental problems. He was sore for a week or so. I wish the same for you, although I would at least see the dentist, as no two cases are ever exactly alike and your front teeth are something you don't want to mess with.

BTW, make sure you stay hydrated and "graze" on food so your sugar stays up, if this is what you think could have caused the fainting. Be aware it could be more serious and happen again. If it does, and especially if you've taken care of those two things, you should seek help right away for further testing. Good luck.

Don't know anything about the teeth, but your fainting may have something to do with your blood preasure. Every single time (seriously) I stand up, I black out and get dizzy (never pass out though) and I finally went to the Dr about it, and she did a test. She had me lay down, and took my blood preasure. Then I sat up, she took it again, then I stood up, and she took it again. Every time I sat / stood up, my blood preasure went down 10-15 points (or whatever you call it!). She gave me the number to a heart Dr. but only if it gets worse - really theres nothing you can do about it.
Good luck with your teeth, personally, I'm an anti-dentite!!! LOL

Get to the dentist ASAP. You do not want them to darken. When I had tooth pain it resulted in a root canal.

You do not have to cancel your wedding just the venue. Go to the JP or a Church and exchange vows. You are married.

About a week ago I face planted in the concrete driveway. My one tooth was a little loose and sore but it tightend up and the pain went away in a few days. That might be because I have braces.

Actually we will cancel the wedding and have it some other time. I don't really want this thread to be about whether or not anyone "needs" a wedding to have a marriage. We realize we don't but we want one.

I went to the ER last night. I had to have a CT Scan and fluids and they told me my brain is fine and none of my teeth are broken.

I'm going to go for a consult with a dentist soon and find out how long I can put this off. I really was hoping the nerves would just heal themself but apparently that never happens?

Is it true that damaged nerves in teeth can not heal and just be ok?

DH got his wisdom teeth taken out (on my 21st birthday no less!!) and the Dr messed up and cut his nerve. Half his chin is numb and forever will be. I don't know if thats on the same level as what your talking about though.

The same thing happened to my mother last year - she fainted and hit a tooth. She did see a dentist and he couldn't find a problem, but it took over 6months for the tooth to stop bothering her.

I can deal with waiting 6 months. My pain tolerance is very high. I'd rather be in some pain than withdraw my savings to pay for dental surgery. I know thats not a popular opinion, but :confused3 it works for me.

I like hearing stories where people's tooth pain went away...

You still need to see the dentist. He can do tests to see if the root is dying. If it is you need to do the work asap to prevent the tooth from turning black.

In my case, I fell and chipped the tooth at age 7. It ached for a few days, and then the pain DID go away (and everything checked out ok on the x-rays that were taken immediately after the fall). I was painfree until just before my 18th birthday, at which point the tooth hurt excrutiatingly bad, and pretty soon there were signs of an abcess, because the nerve had died. But it took 10 1/2 years for that to happen. I did need a root canal, but because it was only a front tooth, the bill wasn't as high as most root canals. No crown was necessary at that time. I would definitely have a dentist x-ray it, but it could very well be fine FOR NOW.

Well, I called the dentist and they can't see me until 1/16 so I will have to wait a few weeks anyway. Let's hope it goes away by then.

I had a very similar situation. I fainted from dehydration, fell on the hardwood floor, and the pain from my front tooth DID go away! DH took me to the hospital, where they admitted me and gave me IV fluids, so I couldn't see a dentist. But the pain from my teeth decreased after about 3 days, but it didn't entirely go away for about 6 months.

There seems to be a lot of that today, since this post is from 2009 and I haven't seen this poster around, i doubt she is going to come back and answer.
