I swear I am falling apart....getting old sucks!!!

The last few months I have had a problem when eating some things. It feels like the food "gets stuck" while going down. Some food I have no problem with but others I do. I know pastas seem to do this. Most times I can just walk around a little bit and the pain of the food not going down goes away and then I can continue eating. I can go days with out this happening but then all of a sudden it will start again. The most recent was a night I ate cubed steak and mashed potatoes. I tend to eat one thing at a time so I ate the cubed steak and had no problem..then when I tried to eat the potatoes the just got "stuck" and could not even wash them down. I walked around and that did not help. The area the food gets stuck in is not in the neck area but more like in the chest or breast bone area. I ended up...not trying to be gross with this......throwing up the potatoes and the water I was drinking to get relief. The rest of the food I had been eating stayed with me so it was just the part that felt stuck. Sometimes bread does this but not always.Sweets and vegetables never do this and every once in a while a meat will do this but overall it is a pasta/rice/potato thing.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on what ths could be?

It could be any number of things, but don't fool around with it -- get yourself to a doctor and find out. Have you had heartburn in the past?

I agree with getting youself to a doctor to be checked out. I had a problem with drinking liquids. It turned out that I had ulcers in my escophagus.

I have acid reflux and I've never had that symptom. That's not so say that it's not possible, though. You REALLY need to see your Dr. asap to find out what is going on.

I have acid reflux and do not have that symptom; however, in all my "reading" about GERD I've come across some things that describe what you are talking about.

Sometimes it can be an esophageal motility problem. Meaning, that we you swallow the esophagus goes into a "motion" to get the food down. When that doesn't go right, then things get stuck.

My aunt has this problem you describe and she has had some "bad" moments in restaurants. But, she is about 150 lbs overweight and believe that this a lot to do with it.

The last thing to think about is a possible tumor or erosion of the esophagus.

I agree with the other poster that this is not something to mess around with.

My sister has something like this happen and she feels like she is going to die. One time years ago it happened when the 2 of us were in London. She really thought that she was going to die and was not only scared, but also frustrated because she couldn't tell me that if she died that she wanted me to have the new cookbook that she'd just bought.

It goes away and I don't think that she ever throws up, but I also don't know if she's really figured out what is going on. The only times that I have something like this happen (and it's mild) is when I'm eating raw carrots. I have to eat them slowly and then I'm fine.

I had some thing similar when I ate bread. It gets "caught", like nothing will move, and it feels like I'm choking, and that something is going to erupt, then I have to vomit. Mine is Gerd(due to hyplori). I had an endoscopy done to rule out other things and check my throat, then went on a pack of pill including prevacid and 3 other pills 2 times a day for 20 days. Was great for 5 years no problems but it coming back when I eat under stress again. Call your Gasteroentologist. :grouphug:

Another possibility is a hiatal hernia (not sure if I spelled that right).
