Can someone post a permanent thread for instructions for iron ons?

First of all, thank you again to all the DISigners on this board. Your efforts make a lot of people very happy.

Originally, I was only going to use the DISigns for scrapbooking and for my autograph books. But the tee shirts and bags are SO amazing that I think I am going to have to do some for our trip.

However, I see so many threads about getting the iron-on's wrong that I am afraid to try it! Is there somewhere that the tips and instructions are all in one place? Obviously, there are directions on the packaging, but so many people still post that they do it wrong or that the instructions aren't clear.

If there is no thread with all the info, would someone who had successfully created some shirts consider making one? Light shirts, dark shirts, reverse imaging, wash, don't wash, YIKES!

If no one wants to tackle it, I understand. It is a lot of info. But it sure would help!

Thanks!:thumbsup2

I don't want to tackle it but I do have some advice. Read and follow the instructions on whatever brand of paper you buy very carefully.
I was very nervous about actually doing the iron ons too after years of following this board. When I finally did it and followed the instructions carefully they turned out so great and it was so easy that I decided I needed to do more! That's when I learned how to use PSE.

I have used Avery and ebay dark transfers. I washed my shirts before without using any fabric softener per the iron on instructions. I followed the instructions exactly and haven't had any problems.

I've used mostly Wal-mart shirts that have been on sale for $3.00 or less.

When you print the iron-ons there are little lines on the transfer. The iron ons look much better after they have been ironed on the shirt than before. The colors are brighter once they are ironed on.

I have made about 30 shirts. I only botched one and that is because my iron has automatic shut off. You have to watch that if you are going to be using your iron for a long period - make sure it doesn't shut off on you and start cooling!

So my advice is don't put it off any longer. Buy some iron-ons, follow the instructions and have fun. :goodvibes

I agree with the previous poster. It is very important that you follow the instructions from the brand of iron-on that you buy. They sometimes are all a little bit different. I've used three different brands and had no trouble and they all were a little bit different.

A couple of the major things to remember:

1. Prewash your item and do NOT use fabric softener. This seems to be the main things that gets people. My mother used fabric softener and the first time the item was washed after doing the iron-on, it started coming off. She used exactly the same brand of iron-on as me and I've washed my items many, many times with no problem.

2. The light transfer paper usually needs to be printed in reverse and the dark usually does not. Notice, I say usually because some brands are different.

3. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS to the littlest detail. :) This really is the most important advice.

I know I am about to look very foolish, but what is PSE???

Thanks for the advice. I think I am gonna try a shirt this week:thumbsup2

Photoshop Elements

Let us know how the shirt goes. It's a lot of fun!:goodvibes

I have a transfer on the front of one of my t-shirts and I want to do one on the back of the same shirt. I tried this on a different shirt before putting a cutting board in between the shirt so that the front transfer wouldn't melt or have something happen to it. The t-shirt stuck to the cutting board and when I pulled the shirt away the transfer tore. :confused3 Has anyone else done a transfer on the front and back of a t-shirt? If so how did you make it work? Maybe I didn't let it cool enough? I'm not sure, but I want to make a shirt today without ruining another one! Now I'm a little 'gun shy'! Please help! TIA!!!:cutie:

I've done them before. I would probably give the first transfer 24 hours to dry completely before doing the transfer on the other side. I would put a pillowcase down on the surface to have the initial transfer on so that if it rubs during ironing it is on a soft surface.

Thanks, Kari! I knew it had to be something easy, but darned if I could figure it out! Thanks! I'll post the shirts when I get them done in a couple days! We were going to go as pirates and decided it was too much to pack with all the other stuff so DH suggested t-shirts. He said, 'can you find some that have disney characters on them?'....I said, 'oh yea, I know just where to find some designs and make them ourselves!' He looked rather confused, it will shock him that me of all people (I'm not a crafty person at all!) will 'make' him a shirt to wear! Wait till I have him go through all the design options!?! :rotfl:

Thanks!

When I did shirts for our last trip, I did both white and dark shirts. The white shirts are all fine - they've been worn and washed many times. On all of the dark shirts, however, the design is cracking. I followed the instructions of the transfer paper. Any idea what I did wrong?

Like Kari said always keeps a pillow case or something down on your work area .. also .. If you have an old (THICK) phone book still lying around .. they work wonders when doing front and back iron on's .. I did one transfer and let it cool and then stuffed the phone book inside the shirt and went at the second .. let them cool and no problems .. don't be gun shy. just try it ..

Didn't see your question answered. There are few stickys at the top and one I believe called 'tips' has a long thread with helpful hints.

Hope that helps.

Trish
