Can someone please explain FastPass to a newbie?

We are leaving this afternoon and I haven't done all my homework! (Just me and DH though ... no kids to plan for.) Anywho ... how do we do FastPass? We are staying offsite -- can we still use it or is it only for Disney Resort guests? Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much for all your knowledge. Everyone is SO nice on this board!!!

Oh wow! Have a great time on your trip! You must be so excited--just a few hours to go! As long as you have a multi-day pass, you can use fast pass--it is not restricted to resort guests. All you do is go up to the fast pass kiosk that is near the ride's wait line and insert EACH person's park pass, one at a time. A small ticket will come out for each person that gives a time window to return back to the attraction (for example, it may say between 12:30 and 1:30). When you are ready to go back, make sure you enter the seperate line for fast pass users only (it will be clearly marked for you). A CM will take your fast pass. Note that you can only have one (maybe two?) fast pass at a time. To get a fast pass for another attraction, you have to wait untl the time on the previous fast pass has passed. Also remember that only certain attractions have fast passes--not all of them. They will be indicated on your park map. Hope this is clear--maybe someone else could explain it better. It's not restricted to multi-day passes either. Anyone can use fastpass, whether they have a multiday pass, one day, AP. All you need is a pass with a magnetic strip that has been used for park entrance that day. Those really old passes that had a stamp or punch to indicate days used won't work - although you can trade those in for magnetic strip passes.
