A friend of mine graciously allowed a group of our friends to use their DVC points for the year to book week long stay at a 2bedroom at OKW.

There were originally 7 of us going now there are only 4. I am totally sick over this as we could now even fit into a regular hotel room never mind a villa.

What options might we have to change the room to something smaller. How does that affect her points?

Can anyone help me?

When is your vacation? Also, the answer could be very complicated based on the type point used? Banked? Borrowed? Their use year,etc...

I now see you list the dates.. Next trip: 10/4-10/12 Me and 7 of gal pals at OKW!

The major problem you have is you're within 31 days so canceling or reducing the accommodations will place points into holding account. This is going to get complicated. I'd call your friend...

I assume this trip is the one from 10/4-10/12. This may be difficult, as you're already in the 30 day window in which cancellations are very restricted.

It may be possible to downgrade at the mercy of the CM at MS and have the points not go into holding, but I wouldn't count on that. Also, the first week of October is a peak time for DVC resorts, and finding a studio/1-bd for a full week at that time may be problematic.

That being said, my family frequently books a 2bd for 4-person stays, and we love it that way. So what may be best here is to just stick with the 2bd, enjoy it, and spend some time while you're at WDW looking for the perfect 'hostess' gift for the friend who lent you the points.

When would the hold points expire? Maybe we can plan a second trip to use them or find someone to "rent them"

They were her use year points.

The 4 of us would even be willing to share a regular resort room if thats all that was available to help save her the huge difference in points.

Holding status points must be used by the end of her current use year, and can only be used for reservations made 60days (or less) prior to arrival. Changing to a regular non-DVC hotel room, if you plan on using he pints for that, would not really save you anything. Non-DVC hotels take a LOT of points.

If here is availability, yo might be able to change to an OKW studio. It has two queen beds and a kitchenette, but the remaining points would still go into holding status. Remember that your friend is the one that would have to make any and all changes to your reservation, as she is the member. Perhaps you know someone else you could invite? If your friend has an October, Becember orFebruary use year, I would consider those extra points lost, due to the popularity of travel to DVC in the lower oint winter months and also the Holiday season, Marathon, Food & Wine Fest, MLK weekend, etc.

Do you know what her UY is?

Here's the deal on holding points: You must use them in the current use year (they cannot be banked), and you can only book with them 60 days out. So if she has, say, an April UY, you could plan a February trip that you would book in December. If she has an November UY, you're stuck.

So that isn't terrible. The real trouble may be in downgrading as the resorts seem to be pretty full during the latter part of the time you're there.

If her use year is Oct 1st would that mean she would have untill Oct 1 2009 to use the points in the holding account?

If so I may be able to rent them from her as I was planning a trip with my family for next year anyways. Would that work?

Oops, you're right, since the current reservation is in October, if she has an October use year, she'll have until Sept 30, 2009, to stay on those holding points. Just remember, that she could not make any room reservations prior to 60 days before arrival using those points.

However, if you are thinking of "downsizing" your current reservation to a smaller DVC Villa, there may be no availability, either, so you may wind up having to cancel DVC completely for this trip and trying to book on cash through Disney for your current trip, and then taking your chances with DVC for your next trip at 60 days.

4 in a 2 bedroom, everyone gets thier own bed !! Yeah !!

I'd just keep the 2 bedroom. You'll have 2 bathrooms (really nice when you've got 4 people in a unit). Now, you won't be so stuffed in the room. I seriously doubt you'd find availability for something smaller this late for the whole week. Just keep the 2 bedroom and enjoy the extra room.

I agree with the OPs, for four adults who aren't married to each other, a 2-bd is really ideal. Beyond that, it's so nice to have the kitchen and the washer-dryer when you're there a full week. I wouldn't want to downgrade to a studio or a regular non-DVC room for those reasons. Just use the 2-bd and enjoy it.
