Can someone help me figure out this card trick?

I overheard someone doing a card trick that I would like to learn. Basically, they were telling a story with the cards. The story was about a guy named little joe and he kept going out to 8th and 9th street to get people to start a game of poker. When he returned he always got a $2 tip and the correct card was always turned over to go with the story. Has anyone heard of this story and do you know how it goes?

For that one, the answer is always the 9 symbol. It's because whatever number you come up with will always be a multiple of 9. Look at all the 9 multiples -- 9, 18, 27, 36, etc. They're all the same, and that's the symbol that will appear in the "crystal ball."

Actually, every number that's a possibility has the same sign beside it. It took me awhile to figure it out, but we thought it was cool till that point.
