I am planning a trip this spring, I was looking at an old confirm from Disney and on the back it shows the cancellation policy. It states that you can cancel and pay a penalty up to your arrival day. My question is, do you need trip insurance to do this or can you just cancel and pay the penalty without the trip insurance?

The only time I have had trip insurance in the past was for our Sept 2001 trip, which we canceled, but that was different. The only reason I had the insurance then was that my uncle was very sick and didn't have much time left.

I was trying to decide if I should get the insurance this trip just in case someone gets sick and we can't take the trip. But I don't really understand the whole insurance thing.

Any opinions?

Without the insurance, you would pay the penalty. With insurance, insurance would pay the penalty.

If you cancel for a reason that is covered under the insurance -than the insurance should cover the penalty. Insurance doesn't cover everything, such as weather related problems, and I believe I've read before that someone was charged the penalty and had to submit a claim to be reimbursed by insurance. You'll have to read the policy. I don't think it's an automatic thing.

If someone in your party is too sick to travel it should be covered. I've not submitted a claim to Disney ever but I had to do some to cruise companies which required a doctor's statement, then after they approve it my clients were reimbursed.
