Can someone explain pin trading?

Joeysmommy,

What are Tinkerbell gifts?

foxykendra-
i buy lots of little Disney themed gifts for my kids (4 and 6) before we leave for DL.
It can be things like Lightning McQueen T-shirts, Disney coloring books, crayons, Disney books, Disney dollars, pins, Disney Crocs, Disney racers.
It's usually something they might want while we are there, only I buy it aheadof time for a lot less at Target, WalMart, Disney Store, ebay or disneyshopping.com.

I pack it in my suitcase in Target bags so they can't see what's in there.
It's getting harder to surprise them as they get older.
I put them out on their bed or on the table in the hotel so in the morning when they wake up "Tinkerbell" came by last night!
I told them Tink and the Tooth Fairy are cousins ::yes::

It helps cut down on the gimmees while we are walking by stores, esp World of Disney!

Tink gifts don't just have to be for kids, I surprised my Aunt on our November trip with leopard Mickey ears from the Disney Warehouse, lanyard and pins.
She was just as excited as my kids..maybe even more.

Have fun shopping!

Thanks.

I had to start keeping a list for our September Birthday trip, I over bought the year before it was a little out of control. Once I start going to the Dollar Store it's all over.

Our trip for next week is a surprise, it's a little Yay! School is out let's go to DL trip. It is sooooo hard not to tell them, esp when they are begging to go, "September is too far away!"

were gona be doing the tink stoped by the room thing this time hehe im gona do two tho, one the night before we leave with things for the 9 hour bus ride and then one in the hotle

My kids have something waiting every night when we get back to the hotel. Nothing big, like the first night we leave new Disney PJs, then water bottles, etc., this way I can get things when they go on sale and save. With 5 girls I need to save where I can and they get more than they would have. My kids are still young so they don't know its not from DL so its just as good as something they got there (little do they know I got it for $5 instead of $25:cool1: ). So basically things I would have got for the trip anyway, I just make sure to find it with a Disney theme and give it as a present form a Princess or any character for that matter. It also gives them something to look forward to when he head back to the hotel for the night, since they know the routine.:goodvibes

I haven't even gotten to DLR yet and already I'm addicted to pin trading! I had no idea the pins would be so darn cute! I bought the cheapo Year of a Million dreams pin starter set/lanyard and some 50% off pins from my local disney store, but even with them half off, they were might expensive! I'll have to control myself when I go shopping for souveniers, I could easily spend too much on these silly little pins. I'm only going to bring a handful with me when we go. I'm worried mine are so new that no one will want to trade with me!

Where does one aquire a "pin book?"

The whole concept always confused me. Step 1: You buy some pins.
Step 2: trade them for pins you like better. Why not just buy the pins you like better in Step 1 and skip Step 2? Or is the fun more in the interaction with other pin traders? That's what I'm thinking.

becouse the pins you like cost 6-13dollers each
you buy a grab bag some where and trade them all for the pins you like and you save alot more.
and its fun. they have speical lanyards just for kids to trade off of teal i think and then the blue ones every one can. i got lots of pirates ones. i looked in the store one was 13 that i got for free

Plus some of the pins you can't buy, you can only get them from CM lanyards. I collect hidden Mickey pin sets that I like the theme of. I love searching for the elusive last pin to complete a set!!

how many pins dose a pin book hold and how much do they run?

They come in different sizes. I have a small one (from WDW) I keep my traders in, then 2 big ones for my keepers (one from Disneyland and another from Disneyland Paris.) I can't help on the price as the small one and the big DL one I got from ebay and the Disneyland Paris one I paid for in Euros and can't remember the price!!
I love my pin bags though as they help me sort my collections. I have one bag with CM pins in the themes I collect plus pages for Tink and Minnie pins which I also collect. Then the other bag has a page for each park (one for Epcot, MK, AK, DHS, DL, DCA and the two DLRP parks)

wow how cool im just thinking one for our familys colectbule ones the ones we wont trade. ty for the info i will look this up for sure ty

My DD and I started really getting into pin trading our last trip. I always just bought and kept the pins I bought. Pin trading though has helped me to get pins I really like while giving away pin duplicates (sometimes you get duplicates in starter kits or in the mystery boxes and cans). Also it is fun to trade for pins that you really like but can no longer buy in the store.

The castmembers also have some pins you can't buy. While in Epcot this past March (in the Figment building, with the Kodak photoshop) a castmember who was helping us with our photo order gave my DD a set of pins that came on cardstock - the pins were the same and the object of it was to keep one and find someone you don't know to give the other pin too. It was something about passing the magic and it was really cool. My DD is 15 so I was surprised that they did this with her and not someone younger but glad that they treat kids and older kids and even adults alike. She gave the 2nd pin to a younger girl when we were in line for the bus who was just starting to collect pins. It was really neat!

I'm with you on that. :goodvibes

If I want a pin I buy it. I won't have extra pins to trade, b/c I won't have bought it in the first place.

Hubby does trade SOME, but about 3/4 of his pins were gifts from me and if he ever trades them he is in big time trouble. When he gambled (and won) without telling me (I was brand-new, like one week post-conception, pregnant and was passing out at 8pm and he couldn't wake me to tell me) during our honeymoon cruise, he got to spend twice his winnings on a sapphire bracelet to make it up to me...he knows not to get in trouble like that anymore. :rotfl:

(he also was in trouble, same night, b/c he messed up at the midnight chocolate buffet and didn't bring me any chocolate covered strawberries!)

Anyway, he enjoys the interaction, but I don't, so I don't truly understand pin trading. :cool2:

ps do they zip up or anything so none can fall out

Yes they zip up. They are a zip bag with felt pages in. The felt pages are quite thick and the two back to back pages are seperated by velcro at the top. I noticed that the bags from the 3 parks are different. For example the Disneyland Paris one is made of a more waterproof material cover and the zips are mickey heads, whereas the Disneyland one is more of a fabric with regular zips. All 3 have different embroidery on the cover which is neat. There are also protector pages between each felt page so your pins do not get scratched.

They zip. Our big ones were purchased at DL, one has Pirates, one has Jack Skellington. They were almost $50 each!! They do have slightly smaller, more generic ones for about $40 and they have smaller Tink ones for about $35. We put cork boards in between our pages, then you don't need backs, you just pop the pins in and out. :)

I trade because I like meeting new people, the CM's are so nice and most of the people I've met have been amazing. I also trade because I like the CM pins that you can't get unless you do trade. We buy grab bags of traders and use them to get new stuff from CM's.
